Aircon Outdoor Fan Running but Not Cooling

When the outdoor fan spins but cooling stays poor, people assume the system is working. It is not. Fan movement alone does not confirm the compressor is loading or the refrigerant circuit is intact.

SAFETY WARNING

Stop using the unit and contact a technician if you notice burning or electrical smell, breaker tripping repeatedly, or harsh metal noise from outdoor unit.

Compressor Not Loading While Fan Runs

The outdoor fan motor and compressor run on separate circuits. A failed capacitor, stuck contactor, or compressor winding fault can stop the compressor while the fan keeps spinning normally.

  • Outdoor fan spins but room stays warm.
  • Outdoor sound lacks normal compressor load pattern.
  • Cooling does not improve with continued running.

We listen for compressor engagement, test the run capacitor with a meter, and check contactor contact condition to confirm whether a start component or the compressor itself has failed. Fan movement alone is not proof that the cooling cycle is healthy.

Refrigerant Path Loss or Restriction

The compressor runs but refrigerant charge is low from a slow leak, or a restriction in the liquid line or filter drier blocks normal flow. Cooling output drops gradually over weeks.

  • Cooling has faded over time.
  • Airflow may feel normal but air is not cold enough.
  • Run duration increases without comfort gain.

We measure suction and discharge pressure, check suction line temperature, and inspect for oil traces at joints to confirm whether the issue is a leak, restriction, or charge shortage. Top-up alone without root-cause confirmation can repeat the same problem.

Control Path Allows Partial Run Only

A faulty outdoor PCB or communication error between indoor and outdoor units can allow the fan to run but block the compressor start command. The system appears active but never enters full cooling mode.

  • Fan runs but system response is inconsistent across attempts.
  • Indoor display or indicator behavior may be abnormal.
  • Pattern can reset temporarily after restart.

We check communication signals between indoor and outdoor boards, read stored error codes, and verify the compressor start command sequence before recommending any parts. Approving major parts before sequence checks can miss the actual trigger.

Not Always a Fault

High room heat load can make cooling feel weak even when the system runs, especially in peak heat periods.

How to Tell

  • Cooling is better in cooler periods.
  • Other rooms perform differently under same system.
  • No warning signs or trip behavior appear.

If cooling remains poor across conditions, treat it as a system fault path.

Help Us Diagnose Faster

Just observe, no disassembly required:

  • Cooling trend: sudden drop / gradual decline / always weak
  • Outdoor sound: steady loaded sound / humming then light fan only / inconsistent
  • Airflow: normal airflow warm air / weak airflow / changes after restart
  • Restart effect: temporary improvement / no change / not tested
