Older HDB one room weak: blower packed behind a clean filter

The filter looked clean, but one older Choa Chu Kang HDB bedroom still had weak wind. That is a common trap. A clean filter only proves the front layer is clear; it does not prove the blower wheel behind the cover is clean.

Concern
Client worried the fan motor was weak because the filter was already clean.
Found
Blower wheel packed behind a clean filter
Key check
Removed the cover and checked the blower before quoting a motor repair
Result
Airflow improved after the blower was cleaned. The bedroom cooled more evenly, and no fan motor or gas work was needed from this visit. The filter stayed clean, but the hidden wheel was the difference.

What we were told

The bedroom took much longer to cool than the other rooms. The client had washed the filter twice, but the wind still felt weak at the front of the unit and the room stayed stuffy at night.

What we checked

The clean filter changed the question. Instead of repeating the same surface clean, we opened the indoor unit enough to inspect the blower wheel and coil face. We also compared airflow between fan speeds, because a blocked blower often sounds like it is running but still moves very little air into the room.

  1. The filter was clean and seated properly.

  2. The blower wheel behind the cover was heavily packed with grey dust.

  3. Airflow stayed weak even when fan speed was increased.

  4. The fan started smoothly, with no grinding or scraping sound.

What we found

Dust had built up on the blower wheel blades behind the clean filter. The wheel was still spinning, but each blade could not scoop and throw enough air forward. That made the room feel weak without proving the motor had failed. In older HDB flats, this is common when routine cleaning keeps the visible filter tidy but the blower is not cleaned deeply for a long period. The airflow loss came from hidden buildup, not from a failed fan motor, control fault, or gas issue.

What fixed it

We explained that a motor replacement was not supported by the checks. The next step was to clean the blower and the nearby coil face properly, then recheck airflow before discussing any parts. After cleaning, we tested the unit across the fan speeds and showed the client the difference at the outlet. We also advised not judging the unit by the filter alone in future, especially if one room feels weak while the others are still normal.

Outcome

Airflow improved after the blower was cleaned. The bedroom cooled more evenly, and no fan motor or gas work was needed from this visit. The filter stayed clean, but the hidden wheel was the difference.

What this case teaches us

A clean filter does not clear the whole airflow path

  • Weak wind after filter cleaning often means the blockage is deeper inside the unit. The blower wheel can still be packed with dust.
  • Older HDB rooms can run for years with light surface cleaning, while the hidden blower slowly loses airflow.
  • Before approving motor work, ask whether the blower was inspected. If the wheel is clogged, cleaning can restore airflow without a part change.
