Overcharged vs undercharged aircon: both feel the same

Too much refrigerant and too little produce the same complaint: the flat does not get cold enough. That symmetry turns adding gas into a coin flip, and the wrong side of the flip leaves the aircon worse than it was.

One complaint, two opposite faults

A room that will not get cold says nothing about which way the charge is wrong. Too little refrigerant and too much both end in the same place. Air leaves the grille cooler than the room but not cool enough, and the flat never quite catches up. The grille reports a shortfall. It does not report a direction.

Only one of those directions has a name in public. Every owner has heard that an aircon can run low on gas. Almost nobody has heard that a circuit can hold more than it was built for. A picture of the fault with one direction in it produces one fix, and that fix gets asked for by name.

So the visit arrives with its answer already chosen. The owner books a top-up. The technician is called out to add gas. Nothing in that exchange has established that the circuit is short, and the question that would settle it never comes up.

The refrigerant charge, meaning what the right quantity is and why it is a weight rather than a reading, is covered separately. This page begins after it. Given that a system holds a single correct amount, how does an owner tell whether anybody checked which side of that amount the machine is sitting on?

Very little of what the flat shows will help. The list below is what owners usually bring to the conversation, and only the last line points anywhere.

Report the symptom, not the diagnosis

Owners are trained by habit to open with "the aircon needs topping up". That sentence is a diagnosis wearing the clothes of a symptom. It settles the direction before anybody has opened a panel.

Describing what the flat is doing keeps both directions open. Cooling that faded across weeks, a bedroom that lags behind the living room, a bill that climbed on the same usage: each of those sends the visit somewhere. A request for gas sends it to one place only.

Overcharge is put there: no circuit fills itself

A sealed refrigerant circuit cannot gain refrigerant on its own. Any system holding more than it should was filled that way by a person, with a hose, on a day somebody was called out. An undercharge has causes that involve nobody: a leak, or an installation that stopped short of the specified amount. The other direction has one cause, and the cause is a visit.

That is why nobody goes looking for it. The owner files the visit as the day the aircon improved, and it did improve, because cooling carries on getting better for a while past the correct weight before it turns around. The improvement was real. It was never evidence that the amount was right.

The two faults also declare themselves on different schedules. A circuit running short gets louder. Cooling keeps fading, the coil can frost, and eventually the machine stops doing useful work, so somebody gets called. A circuit running over stays quiet. The flat still cools, the bill runs higher than it should, and the strain lands on the compressor where nobody can hear it.

By the time an over-filled system fails, the visit that filled it is far behind. The failure presents as a compressor problem, which by then is exactly what it is. Nothing in that diagnosis points back at a hose. The two events never get filed together, so the lesson is never learned by anyone in the chain.

Drift also runs in one direction only. A visit that adds without weighing moves the quantity up, never down, because nobody removes refrigerant on a hunch. Removal happens as part of a repair, not as part of a top-up. A circuit with several gas visits behind it is therefore more likely to sit over than under. Everyone standing in the room tends to assume the opposite.

Why the next visit rarely questions the last one

A technician arriving at a system with no recorded quantity has nothing to disagree with. There is no figure on any invoice, so there is no figure to test the machine against. The starting point is unknown, which makes every total after it unknown as well.

Suspicion also points the wrong way by default. Weak cooling reads as a shortage to almost everyone, so a system that has already been filled twice is more likely to be filled a third time than to be measured. Each round of that leaves the circuit further from where it belongs, and each round looks reasonable on the day.

Why is adding gas the default recommendation?

Refrigerant goes in quickly, bills cleanly, and leaves behind something the owner can feel before the van pulls away. Establishing a quantity is slower, harder to charge for, and its most common honest result is that the charge is fine and the money belongs elsewhere. Those two facts sit on opposite sides of the same visit.

None of that requires bad faith from anyone. Judged on speed and on price, the visit that connects a hose wins on both counts. A technician who stops to work out what is actually in the circuit spends longer on site for the same job. Sometimes that person also has to say that the thing the owner asked for is not the thing the aircon needs. That is a harder conversation attached to a smaller invoice.

The owner pushes in the same direction without meaning to. A flat that is uncomfortable today wants it fixed today, and asking for a measurement sounds like asking for a delay. Both sides of the transaction quietly prefer the quick answer, and the quick answer is the one that can be wrong in either direction.

The two mistakes do not cost the same. An unnecessary top-up is not a modest fee wasted on nothing. It shifts a working circuit off the weight the machine was designed around, and that shift, rather than the fee, is what surfaces later on the bill and on the compressor.

The result nobody thanks anyone for

There is an outcome that ends a visit with no billable work in it: the charge is correct and the fault is somewhere else. That is a good answer, and it is usually received as a wasted call-out. Owners grade a visit by whether something was done to the machine.

As long as visits are graded that way, the hose keeps winning. An owner who wants measurement has to be willing to accept nothing needed as a proper finding, and to say so out loud before the work starts. That single sentence changes what the visit is being paid to produce.

How can you tell whether a technician is measuring?

The difference shows without any knowledge of the trade. It sits in the order of the visit, in what gets asked before anything is connected, and in whether a figure is ever spoken aloud.

Somebody who is diagnosing works from the outside in. Airflow, filter and coil condition first, then the outdoor unit and what it is breathing, then the load the room is placing on the machine. Refrigerant comes late in that order. Weak cooling is commonly an aircon misdiagnosed as low refrigerant rather than one that is genuinely short.

Then a direction gets named before anything goes in. Short, over, or correct: a technician should be able to say which of the three it is, and say what produced that answer. A visit that never names a direction has not diagnosed one, whatever it writes on the paperwork afterwards.

A quantity gets recorded as well. Not a pressure, not an adjustment. An amount. Where nothing on the invoice says how much went in, the visit has left no evidence anybody can check later, including the next technician to open the same machine.

One measurement an owner can take alone will not close this. The aircon temperature split tells you the system is under-performing. It says nothing about direction, and direction is the entire difficulty.

The questions that force a direction into the open

Five questions cover it. None of them ask an owner to understand the answer in technical terms. They ask only that an answer exists.

Ask them where refrigerant is being proposed, not after the work is done. Once gas has gone into the circuit, the quantity question can no longer be answered from the room, and the paperwork becomes the only witness left.

  • What is this model specified to hold, and what does the pipe route add to it?
  • How much is going in, and how is that amount being measured?
  • What was ruled out before refrigerant became the answer?
  • Will the amount added be written on the invoice?

How the answers sort themselves

Measurement produces figures, or produces the reason a figure is not available yet. Guesswork produces comfort. It is fine now, it needed a bit, this happens to every unit. Comfort is not an answer to any of the five, and the difference is audible on the spot.

Declining costs less than being wrong. Turning down a top-up with no measurement behind it costs a service call and an uncomfortable evening. Approving one that was not needed costs the difference between a correct circuit and an over-filled one, and that gets collected slowly, out of sight.

None of this argues against ever adding gas. A circuit that has genuinely lost refrigerant needs it back, and a system never charged to specification needs completing. Where a leak is in the picture, top-up vs leak repair becomes its own decision with its own order. The argument here is narrower than that. Establish the direction, then act on it.

If the top-up has already happened

An owner who already approved one is not out of options. The useful evidence is what the flat did afterwards. Three things point one way: cooling that improved and then settled worse than before, a bill that climbed on unchanged habits, and an outdoor unit labouring where it used to idle. All three fit a circuit pushed past its weight rather than back to it.

None of that is a conclusion, only a claim worth testing. Emptying the circuit and re-establishing the amount against the figure the manufacturer specified settles the direction in a single visit, and settles it for every visit after.
