A split system moves room air across a cold coil and hands the same air back. Nothing from outdoors comes in through it. That single fact sits underneath the stale-room complaint, the purifier decision, and most of what people expect an aircon to fix.

What a split system actually moves
A split system moves room air in a loop and nothing else. The indoor unit draws air in through the grille, pushes it across a cold coil, and blows it back out. The air leaving the vent is the air that was in the room a moment earlier. It is colder and drier, but it is the same air.
No outdoor air enters through the unit. There is no intake on the indoor unit that reaches outside, and no duct in the wall that carries air in. The fan sets the airflow and the indoor coil sets the temperature. Between them they change how the room air feels, not where it came from.
Heat is what leaves the room, not air. The refrigerant in the pipes picks up heat at the indoor coil, carries it outside, and drops it there. That is how an aircon cools a room. It exports heat while the air itself stays put, and nothing in that cycle swaps indoor air for outdoor air.
Every complaint that begins with a room feeling stale rests on this. The unit can hold a bedroom at any temperature you like, and still hand back air that everyone in it has already breathed. Temperature and air quality are separate measurements. The remote controls one of them.
Cooling and ventilation are two different jobs. A split system does the first one well and does not attempt the second one at all. Once those are held apart, several long-running household arguments turn out to have been about the wrong machine.
Why the pipe through the wall suggests otherwise
The belief comes from the hardware, and it is a reasonable reading of it. There is a unit outside, a hole through the wall, and a bundle running between them. Every part of that looks like a path for air, so people assume air travels along it.
That bundle carries three things and none of them is air. Two copper pipes carry refrigerant, one warm and one cold, both wrapped in insulation. A flexible hose carries condensate water down and out. A cable carries power and the signals the two units use to talk to each other. The wall opening is then sealed around the bundle, because an open gap there lets in rain, insects and heat.
The outdoor unit runs its own air stream that never touches yours. Its fan pulls ambient air across the outdoor coil and pushes it straight back out. That air sheds the heat the refrigerant brought out of your room. There are two separate air streams in the system, and the only thing crossing between them is heat.
Two smaller things reinforce the belief. Fan mode moves air with the cooling switched off, which feels like airing the room even though the air never leaves it. Conditioned air is also drier than the air outside, so it lands lighter on the skin. Dryness reads as freshness, and the unit collects credit for something it did not do.
A button marked fresh air is not a duct
Some remotes carry a button labelled fresh, health, or air purify. On a domestic split, that button switches on a treatment feature inside the indoor unit. It does not open a damper and it cannot draw outdoor air in, because there is no duct behind it to draw from.
Read the label as a claim about the air that is already in the room, not about air arriving from outside. If a salesperson describes the feature as bringing in fresh air, ask where that air enters the building and what path it takes to the room. The question has a physical answer, and a feature name is not one.
What a closed room slowly collects
A shut, air-conditioned room accumulates whatever the people inside it produce. Carbon dioxide is the clearest case because it carries a number. Outdoor air sits around 420 ppm. A closed bedroom with two people asleep commonly reads well past 1,000 ppm by morning, and a small room goes higher still.
Singapore's guidance for indoor air quality in offices puts carbon dioxide under 1,000 ppm. The threshold exists because rising readings track with the heavy, close feeling people report in sealed meeting rooms. At these levels it is a comfort and alertness marker, not a hazard line.
The aircon does not move that number. It cools the air and pulls moisture out of it, and both of those make a stale room more bearable without making it less stale. Turning the temperature down changes how the air feels, not what is in it. A room can be cold and stuffy at once, and often is.
Odours behave the same way. Cooking, a bin, damp laundry, a pet, and the room's own furnishings all release molecules into air that keeps circling. The coarse filter in the indoor unit catches particles, not smells. A smell that has settled into a shut room stays until the air carrying it is replaced.
No flat is sealed, which is why the readings level off instead of climbing without limit. Air leaks in around window frames, under doors, and through service openings. That leakage is slow and nobody controls it, so it takes the edge off rather than solving anything. It is also why a shut room still gives its filter work to do during a haze spell.
Naming what is actually building up decides what will clear it, and the answers are not interchangeable.

The haze inversion: the same fact works in your favour
During a haze spell, recirculation turns into the useful property. Because no outdoor air comes in through the unit, running the aircon in a shut room does not pull the outside in with it. The room ends up somewhat protected, and that protection comes from the seal rather than from the machine.
What the filter is left doing is a smaller job than most people assume. It handles what was already indoors, plus whatever leaks past window frames and door gaps. That load is real and it grows while the air outside is bad. It is not the load of an intake pulling a stream of outdoor air through the unit.
This is the logic sitting underneath the usual advice about aircon during haze. Shut the room and let the unit hold it cool. Filtration is a separate question with a separate answer. The advice was never that the aircon cleans the air. It is that the aircon makes staying shut in bearable.
One exception sits outside the flat. The outdoor unit during haze keeps breathing raw ambient air, so the seal that protects the room does nothing for the coil out there. Deciding to keep a room shut is a decision about the room. It says nothing about what the unit on the ledge is taking on.
The ventilation habit inverts while the air outside is bad. On an ordinary week, replacing room air is the fix for staleness. During a haze spell, replacing it is what carries the problem indoors. Hold the air changes until the reading outside comes down, and take the staleness as the cheaper of the two.
Systems that do supply outdoor air
Some systems genuinely bring outdoor air in, and the difference is worth knowing before assuming anything about yours. It is not a matter of brand or price. It comes down to whether a duct was designed to carry outdoor air to the unit, and whether the unit was built to condition that air before it reaches the room.
Commercial buildings do this by design. An air handling unit blends a set share of outdoor air with the air returning from the floor, filters the mix, and cools it before sending it out. That share is a setting, chosen when the system was designed and adjustable by whoever runs the building. It is the reason a well-run office floor does not go stale the way a shut bedroom does.
Domestic equipment can do it and almost never does in Singapore homes. A split can be fitted with a dedicated fresh-air duct, and separate ventilation systems exist that run outdoor air through a home continuously. Both are decisions taken before installation, with ducting, openings and capacity to match. Neither is a mode anyone switches on afterwards.

What this changes about a stuffy room in a flat
For almost every Singapore home, the honest answer is that the building supplies no outdoor air and the aircon supplies none either. Windows, doors and extract fans are the whole ventilation system. That is not a fault in the equipment, and no amount of servicing changes it.
It does change who owns the problem. A stale bedroom is a habit question, and a musty one is usually a unit question. Sorting which is which before booking anything saves paying for a clean that was never going to fix the complaint.
Ventilating costs cooling, so make the exchange deliberate
Replacing room air throws away what the unit just paid to produce. The air going out is cool and dry. The air coming in is warm and loaded with moisture, and the unit has to work through both again. Ventilation is not free, and pretending otherwise is how people end up doing it badly.
Both extremes fail, in opposite directions. A room that never opens holds everything its occupants produce, along with the smell of whatever happened in it last. A room ventilated by leaving a window cracked with the aircon running bleeds cooling continuously and still never gets a proper air change. The second one feels like a compromise and behaves like the worst of both.
A deliberate air change beats either of them. Open the room up fully with the aircon off, let the air genuinely turn over, then shut it and cool it again. A complete exchange through a real opening costs less cooling than a permanent gap, and it accomplishes far more, because turning over a whole room of air needs more than a crack.
Place the exchange where the lost cooling matters least. Before a room goes into use, after cooking, and after the room has sat empty are the natural moments. Homes with an extract fan in the kitchen or bathroom already own part of this, since running one pulls replacement air through from the rest of the flat.
The point is not to ventilate more, or less. It is to stop waiting for the aircon to do it. Once the two jobs are held apart, the stale bedroom, the smell that will not leave, and the haze question stop being aircon problems and start having answers of their own.
