How this presents

A sour smell for the first stretch of cooling each night that settles once the room is cold. Filters rinsed at home more than once with no change. Cooling itself is unaffected, and the smell has never followed the unit through a full evening.

What else produces this

Timing separates surface growth from deep fouling before anything is opened. Organic film sitting on wet fins and a wet pan is warm at start-up and gives off most of its odour then, thinning as the coil chills it. Deposit bound through the fin depth has no such cycle. A smell that comes and goes with the first ten minutes is describing something reachable.

Why it happens

Condensate keeps the lower fins and the pan wet for hours every night, and a unit on a timer stops while those surfaces are still damp. Nothing dries them before the next cycle. Mould and bacteria settle into that permanent wet film and build a soft layer that smells long before it thickens enough to affect cooling. That is why the odour arrives first and alone.

What resolution involves

A wash with the unit left on the wall. Foaming solution worked through the fins, left to lift the film, then rinsed until the runoff comes clear, with the pan and pipe treated in the same pass. Taking a unit down adds cost and a reinstallation risk, and it buys nothing when the growth is sitting on surfaces a wash already reaches.

How to tell it worked

The smell gone on a cold start, tested after a night off rather than straight after the rinse. Everything smells clean while it is still wet. The question is what it smells like once the film has had a chance to come back.

Why does the aircon smell sour for the first few minutes and then stop?
Because the film that causes it is warm at start-up and gets chilled as the cycle runs. Odour comes off a wet surface fastest when that surface is warm, so it peaks in the opening minutes and thins as the coil pulls the temperature down. That timing is the clue to how deep it sits.
Does a musty smell mean the unit has to be taken down and soaked?
Rarely. Growth that smells lives on the wetted surfaces, which are the lower fins and the pan, and a wash reaches both with the unit in place. Dismounting adds cost and a reinstallation risk, and it is worth it only when deposit is bound through the fin depth.
Will rinsing the filter myself get rid of the smell?
Not on its own. A filter sits in front of the surfaces that stay wet, so rinsing it removes dust and leaves the film untouched. Repeated rinsing with no change to the smell is itself a useful finding: it says the source is past the filter.
What can I do to stop the smell coming back?
Run the fan on its own for a while after cooling stops, so the fins and pan dry instead of staying wet overnight. Many units have a setting for exactly that. Drying the surfaces removes the condition the growth depends on.
