8 aircon breaker-tripping patterns and what they narrow down
When an aircon trips a breaker, the timing decides the first safe inspection. Start-up, load, rain, peak heat, recent service, room pattern, sound and smell each point to a different test path. Do not keep resetting the breaker to force a pattern.

What should happen after an aircon breaker trips?
Stop repeated resets and preserve the timing. If there is a burning smell, water near electrical equipment, heat damage, smoke or sparking, keep the affected circuit off and arrange urgent inspection.
Singapore's Energy Market Authority says an RCCB cuts power when it detects current leakage that could cause a shock. EMA requires a Licensed Electrical Worker for repairs or changes to an electrical installation. An aircon technician can isolate an equipment fault. Fixed wiring or installation work must go to the right electrical professional.

Which eight trip patterns change the inspection?
The breaker is a safety response, not a failed-part label. Each pattern narrows the condition a technician or Licensed Electrical Worker needs to recreate safely.
1. What does a trip at start-up narrow down?
A trip as the outdoor unit starts directs testing to the start circuit, supply connection and weather-exposed isolator before a compressor is condemned. Do not keep cycling the unit to reproduce it.
A Bukit Batok outdoor unit tripped on start. Inspecting the ledge isolator found an oxidised contact causing the intermittent start-up trip.
2. What does a trip only under sustained load narrow down?
A system that starts normally but trips after working hard needs a load-dependent electrical inspection. Connections and insulation along the full route can fail only after current and heat rise.
A Singapore River office tripped on its hardest-working afternoons. Inspecting the full wiring run found insulation worn through at a tight bend in the condenser recess.
3. What does a rain-linked trip narrow down?
A trip that follows rain directs inspection towards outdoor enclosures, cable entries, covers and drainage paths. Keep the system off while wet and do not open an outdoor switch box.
A Changi unit tripped mainly on rainy evenings. The pattern was reproduced under wet conditions and traced to water entering a rusted outdoor switch box.
4. What does a peak-heat trip narrow down?
A trip during the hottest part of the day may follow heavier electrical load, trapped outdoor heat or a temperature-sensitive connection. Record direct sun, other rooms running and outdoor obstructions.
The Singapore River wiring fault appeared only on the hottest afternoons. In a separate Teck Ghee case, an aircon cut out rather than tripped because a new platform trapped hot discharge air. The distinction between a breaker trip and an internal protection cutout changes the test.
5. What does a trip soon after servicing narrow down?
A trip beginning after service or ceiling access should start with the areas opened, disconnected or reassembled. Timing does not prove workmanship, but it determines the first inspection.
A Woodlands unit began tripping within days of routine servicing. Its capacitor cover had been left open, allowing moisture to reach the terminal.
6. What does a trip triggered by one room narrow down?
On a multi-split, one indoor unit can trigger a whole-system shutdown. Record whether the other rooms remain stable when that room is not used.
A Buona Vista system 4 shut down only when one bedroom unit switched on. Isolating that indoor unit allowed the other three zones to run, confirming its control board as the equipment fault.
7. What does a buzz or click before the trip narrow down?
A brief start sound does not prove a seized compressor. The start and run components should be tested before the most expensive part is quoted.
A Jurong West outdoor unit buzzed and clicked on each start attempt before cutting out. Testing found a failed run capacitor while the compressor motor remained intact.
8. What does a hot electrical smell narrow down?
A hot or burning electrical smell makes continued operation unsafe and directs inspection to the exact source area, wiring and terminals. Keep the affected circuit off.
A Toa Payoh system tripped intermittently with a hot smell near the outdoor unit. Heat marks identified a damaged isolator connection rather than a compressor fault.
Which details should be handed to the technician?
Record only what is visible during normal use. Do not remove covers, touch the distribution board internally or test wet electrical equipment.
- Whether the breaker trips immediately, after a known runtime or only under several-room load.
- Whether rain, direct sun or a recent service visit precedes the trip.
- Which indoor unit was started last on a multi-split system.
- Any buzz, click, hot smell, heat mark or visible water before shutdown.
- Whether the device that operated was the aircon circuit breaker or the wider RCCB, if visible without opening the board.
What are the limits of a breaker-trip pattern?
Trip timing cannot identify the failed part without insulation, current, connection and equipment tests. Different faults can share the same pattern, and a system can contain both an aircon equipment fault and an electrical installation fault.
Do not bypass protection, hold a breaker on, replace it with a higher rating or repeatedly reset it. Ask the service provider to state whether the fault sits inside the aircon equipment or in fixed electrical installation work that requires a Licensed Electrical Worker.
