Daikin vs PRISM+ aircon: five ticks, S$98 a year apart
Five ticks on both labels reads like a tie. The register says otherwise. Two multi-splits of almost identical size sit S$98 a year apart, and the parts rating and lifespan widen that gap rather than close it.

One brand sells years, the other sells entry price
Daikin and PRISM+ are not chasing the same buyer. Daikin is a Japanese brand in the mid price tier, holding the dominant position in Singapore residential aircon. PRISM+ is a Singapore consumer electronics brand that moved into aircon on price and app control, sitting in the budget tier with a growing presence. The two names land on the same quote sheet, but they answer different questions.
The question that actually separates them is how long the unit has to last. Daikin's documented Singapore lifespan is 10 to 15 years. PRISM+ is rated at 6 to 10. No pair in the brand catalogue sits further apart on that field, though three other pairings match the same four-year spread. A buyer expecting to stay in the flat for the next decade is not comparing two units. They are comparing one Daikin against the prospect of buying a second PRISM+ inside the same period.
PRISM+ builds WiFi control into its residential inverter line as standard, with app scheduling and energy monitoring, and no separate module to buy. Whether Daikin matches that on any given model is a question for the spec sheet attached to the quote, not for a brand-level claim. The brand aims at cost-conscious buyers who want that without a premium-brand price. For a first flat on a tight fit-out budget, the combination is a genuine argument rather than a marketing one.
One thing this comparison cannot settle is purchase price. The NEA register carries running cost, not what a retailer charges, and installed prices move with the contractor and the system count. What it does settle is running cost, parts supply, expected lifespan, and what each brand tends to fail on. Those four decide more of the total bill than the sticker does.
Two registered models, not two badges
Both brands register a five-tick multi-split of almost the same size, and the labels are not close. Daikin's MKM75ZVMG is rated at 6.07 kW cooling, with label figures of 2,114 kWh a year and S$571. The PRISM+ PRCN28 is rated at 6.30 kW, also five ticks, at 2,476 kWh and S$669. Same tick count, S$98 a year apart.
Capacity does not explain the gap. The PRCN28 is 3.8 percent larger, well inside the 8 percent spread used to treat two registrations as fair comparisons. Per kilowatt of rated cooling, the Daikin draws about 348 kWh a year against about 393 for the PRISM+. Adjusting for size narrows nothing.
The efficiency figures say it more directly. Weighted seasonal performance is 6.11 on the Daikin and 5.53 on the PRISM+. Five ticks marks a range rather than a score, and two units inside one range can sit well apart. The tick count is where most buyers stop reading, and it is the least informative number on the label.
In kilowatt-hours the difference is 362 a year, which is the figure the dollar gap is built from. The register applies one tariff to every row, so the S$98 is arithmetic on consumption, not a price survey. That makes it portable. If the household tariff rises, the gap between these two rises with it, in the same proportion. It also means the figure carries no assumption about either brand's reliability or install quality. Those sit in the sections below, and they do not point the same way as the label in every case.
Rank the whole size band and the positions are unambiguous. Forty-six registrations sit within 8 percent of 6.07 kW. No registration in that band runs cheaper than the Daikin. The PRCN28 is 29th on annual cost and 30th on weighted efficiency. Narrow it to the 28 multi-split rows in that band and the Daikin is still first, with the PRCN28 24th.
Read the model code rather than the badge. Daikin also registers single-split rows in this same band that cost more to run than the PRCN28 does, and PRISM+ registers a second multi-split here, the PRCZ28, at S$650 a year. Brand-level statements break at model level, in both directions. A quote naming only a brand tells you nothing about where the unit lands on this list.
The label assumes eight hours of use a day at 27 cents a unit, on a register snapshot taken in July 2026. A bedroom unit running nightly lands near that. A living-room unit running through a weekend runs past it, and the S$98 stretches with it. Across ten years on label figures the two models differ by S$980. A gap under roughly S$60 a year sits inside the noise of how differently two households use a unit. This one sits outside it.
Parts supply and the year replacement arrives
Parts availability is where the two brands are furthest apart in daily practice. Daikin carries the Excellent rating, one of only two brands in the catalogue that do. The local supply chain is deep, so a board or a sensor for a common Daikin model is a short wait. PRISM+ carries Moderate. Filters and sensors are usually on hand, but PCBs and compressor components may need ordering through the distributor.
Technician familiarity compounds that. Daikin's wall-mounted families are familiar to most local technicians, which shortens diagnosis. Technicians are documented as less familiar with PRISM+ board layouts and error code meanings by comparison. Both brands display a code on the indoor unit, so the fault-signalling method is identical on paper. On a service call the two are not equivalent. A code the attending technician already recognises shortens the visit. On a PRISM+ call, give the full model number and any displayed code when booking so the technician arrives prepared.
The repair-versus-replace bands turn the lifespan gap into money. Daikin's four age bands break at 5 years, then 8, then 12. Repair remains the sensible default across the first eight, and only past twelve do major failures usually favour replacement. The PRISM+ bands break at 2 years, then 4, then 6. The replacement conversation opens six years earlier on the same calendar.
Read that against the fault, not the age alone. Sensor and drainage repairs stay cheap on both brands at almost any age. A control board is the fault that moves the decision. A PCB failure on a PRISM+ at 5 years is already borderline against what the unit originally cost, and past 6 years a major failure generally favours replacement. The same failure on a Daikin at 5 years is a routine repair, and at 9 years it warrants a proper diagnosis before either quote gets accepted.
Servicing cadence separates them by nothing at all. The two published schedules match line for line: filters at 2 to 4 week intervals, a general service roughly quarterly, chemical work on a 12 to 18 month cycle, and a gas pressure check whenever cooling weakens. Smart features on the PRISM+ change none of it. Anyone quoting a maintenance saving on either badge is quoting something neither schedule supports. Across a decade that line is the same line on both units, so it drops out of the comparison entirely.

What each one actually breaks on
Daikin's documented fault character centres on communication and the control board. The U4 and U0 codes report a communication failure across the link joining indoor and outdoor units. Wiring degradation or a board fault is the usual cause on systems past seven years. Board failure itself becomes more frequent past seven to eight years. Inverter models carry a more complex board than non-inverter equivalents, and that board becomes the main repair-cost driver past eight years.
Both named models here are multi-split registrations. That changes how a fault presents inside the flat. A single outdoor unit serves all the indoor units. An outdoor board or compressor fault therefore takes cooling out of every room at once. One warm room with the others still cold points elsewhere. The likely cause there is refrigerant distribution or the indoor side. On older shared systems near capacity, switching every room on together can trip overcurrent protection. Stagger the start-up.
Refrigerant loss is the other Daikin pattern worth naming. Leaks show at flare joints and pipe connections, and a pressure test confirms one before any top-up is agreed. Low gas takes the blame for weak or warm airflow more often than the evidence supports. Dirty coils, a drifting thermistor, and a fan motor running slow all produce that same symptom.
PRISM+ fails on a category no other brand in the catalogue lists as a fault. The smart module drops its connection or fails to pair after a firmware update. Power-cycling the indoor unit and re-pairing through the app clears most of these, and a failure that persists points at the module rather than the aircon. A homeowner can lose an evening to this before realising nothing mechanical is wrong.
Sensor drift is the second PRISM+ pattern. A temperature sensor reading wrong causes short-cycling, or a room that never settles at the set temperature, and it shows up more often where the indoor panel sits in direct sunlight. Outdoor unit noise is the third, and it is usually the mounting rather than the unit. Rubber isolation pads and tightened brackets resolve most of it.
Drainage sits on both fault lists, so it separates nothing. On the PRISM+ the documented causes are drain line gradient, trap position, and clearance behind the indoor unit. On the Daikin they are drainage blockage and condensate line routing, most often in HDB shared risers. Both are installation outcomes rather than brand outcomes. Judging these two brands on water leaks tells you about the installer instead.
The call, and what would change it
For a home you intend to live in past the next decade, buy the Daikin. The label gap is S$98 a year on comparable five-tick multi-splits, the parts rating is the catalogue's top band against its bottom one, and the replacement conversation starts six years later. Three separate fields point the same direction, which is unusual in a brand comparison and worth acting on.
PRISM+ is the correct buy in a narrower set of cases, and those cases are real. A tenanted flat. A unit you expect to hand over or replace within about six years. A fit-out budget that will not stretch, or a household that genuinely uses app scheduling. Inside a short holding period the lifespan gap costs the owner nothing, and the running-cost gap has fewer years to accumulate against.
Purchase price is the one input that can reverse this, and the register does not carry it. Work it out from the quotes instead. Divide the price difference by 98, and the answer is roughly how many years the Daikin runs before the electricity saving closes the gap. A difference of about S$490 closes in five years. A difference of S$1,500 needs about fifteen, which is past the top of the Daikin's own lifespan range.
Two checks before signing either quote. Get the exact model code in writing on both. Each brand registers rows in this size band that reverse the ranking. A quote naming only a badge is not comparable to anything. Then check the room count and layout against the outdoor unit's rated capacity. Both registrations are multi-splits, so that one box sets the limit for every room behind it.
