Why does my aircon breaker trip only after heavy rain?
A breaker that trips with the weather is doing its job. Water is reaching somewhere electrical, or a marginal connection is failing once humidity rises. The trip is the warning, not the fault.

1. Perished seal on the isolator box
Tripping that started after years of reliable service, on an older installation, usually means the isolator seal has given up. Rubber hardens, shrinks and cracks under years of sun and rain. Water then runs along the cable into the box and pools on live terminals until the breaker cuts the circuit.
How to tell
This path is age. Unlike a missing grommet, the installation worked properly for years before it started. Unlike a loose terminal, there is visible water or corrosion once the box is opened.
- It only ever trips during or just after heavy rain.
- The installation is old and has been fine for years.
- It works normally again once everything dries out.
- The isolator box outside looks weathered or cracked.
How we confirm it
We open and dry the isolator, then replace the seal and any corroded terminals. The enclosure is refitted so water cannot track back in along the cable.
Never keep resetting this breaker to get through the rain. Each reset re-energises terminals that have standing water on them, and the breaker is the only thing preventing a fault.

2. Cable entry never sealed at installation
The same wet-weather tripping, but present from early on rather than after years, points to a cable entry that was never sealed. No grommet or gland was fitted at install. Ordinary weather makes no difference. Only sustained rain drives enough water along the cable to reach the terminals.
How to tell
This path was built in. Unlike a perished seal, it never had a reliable period to lose, and the entry point has no gland at all. Unlike a loose terminal, water is genuinely getting inside the box.
- It has done this since fairly early in the installation's life.
- Only long, sustained downpours set it off, not brief showers.
- The cable enters the box without any visible grommet or gland.
- Everything works normally in dry weather.
How we confirm it
We fit a proper gland and seal at the cable entry and dry out the enclosure. The route is then checked so water runs away from the box rather than along the cable into it.
Do not let anyone seal this with tape or filler. A temporary seal fails within a season and the water comes back, so the entry needs a proper gland fitted.

3. A loose terminal that fails once humidity rises
Tripping in wet weather with a dry box inside means the connection itself is marginal. A terminal screw loosens gradually from ordinary vibration. On dry days the joint still carries current. Once humidity rises, the weakened contact heats and arcs enough for the breaker to see a fault.
How to tell
This path has no water in it. Unlike either sealing fault, the box is dry inside and humidity alone can set it off. The problem is a contact that has loosened rather than an enclosure that leaks.
- The box is dry inside when it is opened.
- It sometimes trips on very humid days with no rain at all.
- A scorched or acrid smell hangs around the outdoor switch.
- Trips have been getting more frequent over time.
How we confirm it
We check and retorque every terminal in the circuit, and replace any that show heat damage. The unit then runs under load to confirm the connection stays cool.
Stop running the unit once anything smells scorched near the switch. Arcing at a loose contact damages the enclosure around it, and every reset drives more current through the same weak joint.
