Aircon auto mode: what the unit decides, and how often

Auto mode looks like one setting. Four manufacturers document it four different ways, and on one of their machines it chooses nothing at all. What a unit picks, and how often it picks again, decides whether normal behaviour reads as a fault.

What the word auto is attached to

The word auto sits in at least two places on the same remote, and they control different things. One is the mode selector, alongside cool, dry and fan. The other is the airflow setting, alongside low and high. A complaint about auto mode often turns out to be about the second one.

Some units have no auto position on the mode selector at all. Daikin's cooling-only R32 wall units document the mode button as selecting cool, dry or fan only. Nothing else. On that machine auto exists purely as an airflow rate, so an owner told to put it on auto has changed how the indoor fan behaves and left the operating mode where it was.

A third auto hides on the vane control. Mitsubishi's manual describes the auto vane position as setting the louvre to match the operating mode, blowing horizontally in cool and dry, downwards in fan. That one moves air around. It has no say in what the unit is trying to do to the room.

The distinction matters before any fault talk begins. Auto airflow changes how hard the fan works. Auto mode changes the job the unit is doing. Reporting one as the other produces a description nobody can act on.

Plenty of units sit in auto because that is where they were left. On the Mitsubishi remote the mode button cycles through auto first, then cool, then dry, then fan, so reaching any other mode means stepping past auto first. The same manual notes that its cooling-only models leave the factory with cool stored for the auto-restart function. A unit can therefore come back from a power cut in a different mode from the one it was running in.

What the unit compares, and against what

Auto mode runs on a comparison. The unit reads a room temperature, weighs it against a target, and picks the mode that closes the gap. Where makers differ is where that target comes from, and whether the owner ever sees it.

LG sets the target for you on cooling-only models. LG's own support documentation states that selecting auto sets the target temperature automatically to 25 degrees, and that a cooling-dedicated model then lets the owner adjust only between minus two and plus two levels. The number pressed on the remote is an offset from a target, not a temperature. Someone who believes they have set 25 has set something else. On dual cooling and heating models the same maker allows a real setpoint across the usual range.

Mitsubishi published a full threshold table for one cooling-only room unit. Startup mode depends on whether the room sits above or below about 25 degrees, and cooling then works towards about 24. The figures come from a North American edition printed in Fahrenheit, so treat them as that model's numbers and not as an industry rule. What travels is the shape: a published threshold, a published target, and a decision made against both.

Daikin's heat-pump manual adds an input the owner cannot observe. It states that auto selects cool or heat based on the room and outside temperatures. Outdoor conditions are part of the decision and nothing on the remote reports them. Two evenings that feel identical indoors can produce different behaviour for a reason that is invisible from the sofa.

Auto also narrows what you are allowed to ask for. The same Daikin manual lists a setpoint range of 18 to 32 degrees in cool, and 18 to 30 in auto. The top of the cooling range is unavailable while auto is running. That is a small number with a real consequence: an owner chasing a warmer room in auto can hit a ceiling that cool mode does not have, and read the unmoving display as a stuck remote.

How often auto decides again

The sharpest split between the makers is not what auto chooses. It is whether auto ever changes its mind at all.

Mitsubishi's cooling-only manual is explicit that it does not. The operation mode selected first, it states, is not changed even if the room temperature changes. The unit reads the room once at startup, commits, and holds that choice for the whole session. The manual then tells the owner to press the mode button if the selection stops matching the room, which is a plain admission that it can drift out of step.

Panasonic documents the opposite and puts a number on it. On a single split, the unit selects the operation mode every 10 minutes according to the temperature setting and room temperature. On a multi-split, the same maker's manual says every 3 hours, and adds outdoor temperature to the inputs. Same brand, same word on the remote, two behaviours separated by a wide margin.

Daikin sits between the two without naming a figure. Its heat-pump manual says the system reselects the setting at a regular interval to bring the room to the level the user set. The behaviour is periodic and the period is unpublished, which is worth taking at face value instead of guessing at it.

One further rule makes the same unit behave differently on the same day. Mitsubishi's manual states that when operation restarts within two hours of being stopped, the mode from before the stop is reused instead of being chosen fresh from the room. Switch off after lunch, switch on at three, and the unit inherits the lunchtime decision. Leave it off longer and it decides again.

Put the same unit on a multi-split and the choice stops being local to one room. Daikin's manual states that auto is available on a second room only where it matches the mode already running in the room switched on first, because the first unit takes priority. Rooms that ask for something else drop into standby, and the manual says the flashing operation lamp that follows is not a malfunction. In a flat where one system feeds three or four rooms, that turns one occupant's remote into a constraint on everybody else's.

Mitsubishi's cooling-only manual also stores its auto choice differently from its manual modes. A unit running in a manual mode returns to that mode after a power cut. A unit running in auto does not: the manual states the selection is decided again from the room temperature at restart. Same flat, same evening, and a brief outage is enough to change what the machine does next.

The behaviours owners read as faults

A unit left in auto does things a unit held in cool never does. Most of them arrive looking like symptoms. Manufacturers know it, which is why several of these behaviours are printed in the troubleshooting pages under headings that amount to nothing is wrong.

The commonest is the unit that stops blowing. Daikin files this under conditions that are not trouble: once the set temperature is reached, airflow is reduced and operation stops, during cooling to keep humidity from climbing, and resumes by itself when the indoor temperature moves. Nothing has failed. The unit has arrived and is waiting, and an owner watching a silent grille sees a machine that quit.

Auto airflow produces its own version at switch-on. The same maker's cooling-only manual notes that when cool or dry starts with airflow set to auto, the indoor unit deodorises first and does not emit air immediately, for about a minute. Anyone judging the unit in that first minute is judging a documented startup routine.

Buttons that stop working are the next category. When auto lands on dry, temperature control disappears on several makers. Mitsubishi states plainly that the temperature setting cannot be made in dry. Daikin states that dry controls temperature and airflow automatically, so manual adjustment is unavailable. The remote still shows a number and pressing it achieves nothing, which reads as a dead remote or a failed board.

The room itself feels different when auto picks dry, and that is the design. Dry goes after moisture. The Mitsubishi threshold table prints no target temperature for it at all, and the manual says the room is only slightly cooled in that mode. So the air is softer and the room takes longer to feel cold. A reader expecting what cool mode delivers will report weak cooling on a unit doing exactly what its manual describes.

One maker gives the owner a direct readout of the comparison, and almost nobody knows what it means. The indicator lamp on that Mitsubishi indoor unit lights while the gap between room and target is roughly two degrees or more, and goes out once the gap closes. Lit means still working towards the target. Unlit means arrived. Owners who read the lamp as a status light for the whole machine have been reading a gap gauge.

What auto costs you when something is wrong

Auto mode's real cost lands on diagnosis, not on comfort. A fault is easiest to pin down when the machine does the same thing twice, and auto is built to remove that.

Three published mechanisms each break repeatability on their own. The mode can change on a timer nobody can see. It can change because of an outdoor temperature nobody recorded. It can change because of where the room happened to sit at the moment of switch-on, or because the unit was last switched off inside a memory window. A unit that cooled badly last night and fine this morning may simply have been in two different modes.

That is why an auto-mode complaint starts by establishing what the machine was doing, before any test is worth running. Which mode the display showed. Whether the display changed during the session. What the room was like at switch-on, and the length of the off period before it. None of that requires tools, and all of it narrows the problem.

Pinning the unit to a fixed mode for a stretch is the cheapest step available. It converts an intermittent complaint into one that either repeats or disappears. Poor cooling with the mode held on cool, and a setpoint below room temperature, is a real fault. The mode was never the story. A complaint that surfaces only in auto means the unit has been switching, and the useful question becomes what it switched to.

The model number does the rest of the work. Auto is one word covering a startup-only choice on one machine, a ten-minute cycle on another, and a fan setting on a third. Published behaviour for one unit says nothing reliable about the next. Judging whether a session was normal starts with the documentation for that exact model, and nothing sooner.
