Aircon central controller: the panel that holds the record

One panel on a wall governs every indoor unit in the building, and it quietly keeps a record of what each one did. On a commercial site that record is evidence. Most owners inherit the panel without ever being shown it.

Where the panel sits, and what it is wired to

A central controller connects to the aircon system's own communication line, not to the building's computer network. Daikin's installation manual for the intelligent Touch Manager names two terminals, F1 and F2, under a label marked DIII. The manual states that these two terminals have no polarity. It also warns the installer that the wires landed there must not be power wires.

Each manufacturer runs its own bus under its own name. Mitsubishi Electric calls its transmission line M-NET and specifies shielded cable types for it. LG's AC Smart 5 reaches indoor units over an RS-485 line carrying LG's own protocol. The names differ, and the principle holds across all three. A dedicated pair of wires, run by the aircon installer, carries only aircon traffic.

Phone control sits somewhere else entirely. A wifi module joins the home network, and an ir blaster imitates a handset by firing infrared at one unit. Both work through consumer channels and reach one machine at a time. The panel described here speaks the equipment's own language and addresses every unit on the line.

Many controllers also carry a separate network socket, and the two get confused. On the Daikin unit the LAN socket takes an ordinary RJ-45 cable to a hub, and the manual gives its purpose as setting up or maintaining the system from a remote location. Unplug that cable and the panel still governs the aircon. Unplug the F1 and F2 pair and it governs nothing.

What one panel does that a handset cannot

Scale is the obvious difference, and scheduling is the useful one. Mitsubishi Electric's technical manual for the AE-200 series describes weekly, annual and daily schedules. Each can be set for the units in a group, in a block, on a floor, or across every unit at once. The manual states that five weekly schedules can be retained, and that season schedules can be set alongside them.

The list of schedulable items goes well past on and off. That manual names start and stop, operation mode, temperature setting, airflow direction, fan speed, and prohibition of operation of the remote controller. The last entry is the one worth pausing on. A schedule can decide when the handsets in the rooms stop working.

Grouping is how a building gets organised inside the panel. Indoor units collect into groups, groups into blocks, blocks onto floors. Filter signs, error displays and prohibitions each apply at any of those levels. One instruction covers a whole floor without anyone walking it.

Maintenance prompts are built in at the same levels. The Mitsubishi manual lists a filter sign display and a separate cumulative filter usage time, which is reset when the filters on the units are cleaned. Across a site with many units, that turns filter servicing from memory into a record.

Faults surface at the panel before anyone gets called. Both the Mitsubishi and Daikin panels display a current error together with the unit it belongs to, so a caretaker can report a code and an address instead of describing how the room feels. That one change moves the first conversation from symptoms to evidence.

What any given panel can prohibit or display varies by model. Both the Mitsubishi and Daikin manuals attach that caveat to their own feature lists, and neither claims the range is uniform. Treat every capability below as something to confirm against the panel actually installed.

The record the panel already holds

Before anyone starts guessing at an intermittent fault, ask what the controller recorded. Daikin's operation manual for the intelligent Touch Controller gives the reason in its own words. The History Display is there so the user can see whether the schedule ran as set, and whether errors show up often on any one air conditioner.

The log is broader than a list of error codes. That manual lists the generation and resetting of errors in air conditioners, the same for errors in the system, schedule history, zone registration, changes to the clock setting, and the times the controller was switched on. Every entry carries the time the record was made. The manual caps the combined list at 300 records, deletes the oldest first once that is exceeded, and states that recorded items cannot be deleted.

Mitsubishi's controllers separate the two failure types that matter on a bus. The AE-200 series keeps a unit error log and a communication error log side by side. For a current error, the panel displays the address of the unit where the error occurred, the error code, and the address of the unit that detected it. The technical manual also confirms that error history data is retained even if power is disconnected.

LG's AC Smart 5 records where each command came from. That is a second kind of evidence. Its operation history sorts commands by source: the panel itself, a handset in the room, a login at the panel, a BACnet system, or the schedule. A room that cooled itself all night often turns out to be a schedule nobody recalled setting.

Getting the record off the panel is documented too. The LG manual describes exporting operation history to an Excel file. The Mitsubishi manual describes writing operation data to USB memory, and separately lists a history of the error notification emails the controller has sent. None of this requires a technician to be standing there when the fault happens.

Not every log is permanent, which matters before the panel gets handled. Daikin's manual states that its recorded items cannot be deleted, and the oldest simply fall off the end. Mitsubishi's function list includes an explicit error history reset that erases the unit errors and the communication errors together. Establish what the history holds before anyone clears it, because a wiped log removes the only account of a fault that has stopped happening.

The record survives the things that usually destroy evidence. Mitsubishi's technical manual states that error history data is kept even if power is disconnected, alongside the group and schedule settings. A site that has been through a power failure, a shutdown or a tenancy change still has its history, provided nobody reset it in the meantime.

Limits and lockouts, and why the room will not go colder

A tenant who cannot make a room colder is often not fighting a fault at all. Daikin's operation manual describes an R/C Mode setting applied by zone or by group, in which Set Point can be Permitted or Prohibited. The manual's own description of the prohibited state is that the remote control cannot change the temperature setting. Nothing on the wall tells the occupant that.

Start and stop has three states there, not two. The same setting offers Permitted, Prohibited, and Stop Only. Under Stop Only, the manual states that a handset can stop a unit already running but cannot start one that is off. That is a deliberate tool for after-hours control, and it looks like a dead handset from the room.

The Mitsubishi manual splits the idea into two separate controls. One list covers what can be prohibited outright: start and stop, operation mode, temperature setting, filter sign, fan speed, airflow direction and timer, applied per group, per block, per floor or across all units. The other is a temperature setting range limit, which narrows the band a remote controller is allowed to select. Both carry a note that the items depend on the model of unit.

LG names its versions plainly in the AC Smart 5 manual. A HardLock stops a user controlling any function from the individual remote controller. Mode, fan and temperature locks each restrict one thing, and upper and lower limit temperatures are set separately again.

Panels display what has been locked, which shortens the argument considerably. Mitsubishi's function list includes a display of prohibition of remote operation, and it covers restrictions set by that controller and by another system controller on the same line. Where several controllers share a bus, the restriction may not have been set on the panel in front of you.

Read the lock state before accepting any diagnosis on a leased floor. Where a tenant reports weak cooling and the setpoint refuses to move, a prohibition or a range limit explains the whole complaint with no hardware at fault. A quotation raised before the panel has been read is a quotation raised on incomplete information.

Handover, the password, and the layer above

The password is the part that goes missing. Daikin's manual is blunt about the consequence: if the set password is lost, access to all System Setup menu operation is denied, and the owner is directed back to the dealer. That menu is where group setup, zone setup, schedule setup and the History Display live.

Losing it costs more than convenience. Schedules keep running and the log keeps filling, but neither can be reached or changed. A building can spend years with a panel it can watch and cannot touch.

Bigger panels split control into named roles, not one password. Mitsubishi's technical manual lists a maintenance user, a building manager who holds the admin account, and separate tenant and general user logins. What each role may open is set on its own. LG's manual asks for a manager password at first login, then a change every ninety days.

Three questions belong in any office aircon fitout handover involving one of these panels. Who holds the administrator credentials, whether anyone on site was ever shown the history display, and which roles exist beneath the administrator. A fit-out that answers none of them has handed over the hardware without handing over control of it.

Some panels also decide how the power bill gets split. Mitsubishi's manual describes sharing out total electric energy across indoor units, worked from the data passing along the bus. Two of the measures it names are the time a unit was fed refrigerant and fan running time. Where tenants are billed on that sum, the panel is a business tool as much as a comfort one.

Above the aircon panel there is sometimes one more layer. BACnet is a data protocol built by ASHRAE and published as an international standard. It sets out the objects and services that let equipment from different makers work together. LG's panel logs BACnet commands as their own class in the history. On a site with a building system, the aircon panel may be taking orders, not giving them.

Precedence on the bus gets set deliberately at commissioning. Daikin's installation manual requires a master and slave relationship wherever two or more centralised controllers share a DIII-NET line, and it publishes the order. An interface for use in BACnet ranks above the touch panel, which in turn ranks above the central remote controller and the on/off controller. Mitsubishi's panels show a suspension state when an emergency stop arrives from an external contact or from the building management system.
