Aircon gas top-up vs full recharge: two different jobs

Topping up and recharging arrive as the same request. One adds to whatever the circuit already holds, so the total afterwards is an estimate stacked on an estimate. The other empties the system and fills it to a stated amount.

Two jobs travelling under one name

Adding gas covers two pieces of work that finish in different places. A top-up puts refrigerant into a circuit that already holds some, without settling how much was in there beforehand. A recharge takes the old charge out, then fills the system to the amount specified for that model. Same hose, same gas, different job.

The line between them is not care or thoroughness. It sits in where each one begins. A top-up begins from a quantity nobody established. A recharge begins from an empty circuit, which is a starting point anybody can describe.

Only one of the two has a defined finish as well. A recharge ends at a figure chosen in advance and read off a scale. A top-up ends when the person holding the hose decides the system has had enough, and that decision comes from how the aircon is behaving rather than from any number fixed beforehand.

Both jobs can leave a flat cooler by the evening. That shared result is what lets them trade under one name. The difference surfaces later, at the point where somebody needs to know what the system is carrying. One visit can answer that. The other cannot.

Why the two get quoted as the same thing

The words move around in ordinary use. Recharge appears on plenty of quotes for work that was an addition, and top-up gets used for jobs that emptied the circuit first. Neither term is protected, so neither term tells an owner what will happen at the wall.

Scope is what separates them, and scope is the part a quote tends to leave out. A line saying gas has been priced covers either job comfortably. Asking which one has been priced is a scope question, and it is the only place the difference shows itself before anybody starts.

Why can a recharge be checked afterwards and a top-up cannot?

A top-up produces a total that nobody present can state, including whoever did the work. The amount that went in is known. The amount already sitting in the circuit is not. Combine them and the answer carries the second figure's uncertainty straight through.

That is not carelessness. It is the shape of the job. An addition can only be as exact as the thing it is added to, and the missing number describes a moment that has already gone. No skill on the day recovers it, because the evidence left with the refrigerant that was in there before the visit.

A recharge produces a claim that can be disproved. The system was filled to a stated figure, so anybody who empties that circuit later has something to compare the result against. Agreement says the work was done and the system has held since. A shortfall says refrigerant has left. What the emptying step involves belongs to refrigerant recovery, which is a job of its own.

The asymmetry survives every other detail. Two visits can bring the same equipment and the same care. Only one of them leaves behind a statement about the machine that a later visit is in a position to test.

An amount added is not an amount held

Invoices tend to record the addition, which is the smaller of the two facts. Knowing that gas went in tells you the circuit moved. It does not tell you where the circuit moved to, and where it moved to is what the equipment responds to.

The gap matters most when somebody wants to argue about the system months later. A recorded addition supports a conversation about that visit. A recorded total supports a conversation about the aircon itself. What repeated top-ups do to a system's history

A service file built from top-ups cannot be read. Every entry says gas went in. Not one says what the aircon was carrying before or after, so the file thickens without ever describing the equipment it belongs to.

The blank widens rather than holding still. A system with several additions behind it stands further from a stated quantity than one with a single addition, because each visit that skipped the question laid another layer over the same gap. Nobody along that chain did anything unusual, and the gap grew anyway.

Uncertainty also outlives the people involved in it. Technicians move on, contractors get changed, flats get sold. The paperwork is what survives, and paperwork assembled from additions hands the next person exactly the blank the first person started with.

One job ends the sequence. Emptying the circuit and filling it to the amount specified replaces every accumulated unknown with a single figure, and that figure holds until refrigerant leaves. The effect on the record is the part worth noticing here. The history restarts from a number rather than continuing from nothing.

The situations that ask for a figure you do not have

Certain conversations cannot proceed without a stated quantity. A warranty claim on a new installation turns on whether the system was commissioned holding the amount it was specified to hold. A dispute after a service visit turns on what the circuit carried going into that visit and coming out of it.

Replacement decisions run into the same wall. Judging whether an ageing system is worth keeping means knowing whether it has been holding its charge, and a file of additions cannot say either way. The question then gets settled on opinion, and opinion tends to favour whoever is quoting for the new unit.

When is a top-up the reasonable job?

A top-up is sound work wherever the starting quantity is already known. That single condition decides it. A system filled to its specified amount, with the figure on file, can be topped up afterwards without losing anything, because the addition lands on a base that was established rather than assumed.

The same holds behind a repair that was measured. Where a leak has been found, closed, and the loss quantified on the way out, restoring that quantity is arithmetic. The contents of the circuit stay describable from one end of the job to the other.

Openly temporary work is the second case. A system waiting on a part, or on a decision the owner has not reached, may be worth keeping usable meanwhile. What makes that fair is that the quantity question was raised and put off, rather than never raised at all.

A system already committed to replacement is the third. No future visit will need a baseline, because that circuit has no future to plan for. Establishing a figure for equipment on its way out buys nobody anything, and an addition is the right scope.

None of those describe the common case. The common case is a circuit with nothing established behind it, an owner who was never told there were two jobs, and a visit that adds to a blank because a blank is what it was handed. Where no baseline exists, a top-up cannot create one, and every further addition makes creating one later a bigger piece of work.

What to ask so the quote names the job

One question settles most of this. Ask what the system will be holding once the work is finished. A recharge answers with a figure, because the figure was the plan for the day. A top-up has no answer available, and the shape of the reply is what tells you which job was priced.

The rest of the list exists to stop the first answer sliding. A number produced without a source is worth no more than no number at all. Where the figure came from carries as much weight as the figure.

  • What will the system be holding once this work is finished?
  • Is the existing charge coming out first, or is refrigerant being added to it?
  • What does the file say the circuit holds now, and where did that figure come from?
  • If cooling fades again, what does today's visit leave for the next one to work from?
  • Which of the two jobs is being quoted, and what would the other one change?

Reading the reply

A quote built around a recharge names its target early. It states the model, the quantity that model calls for, and the intention to fill to it. Those three arrive together because between them they are the plan.

A quote built around an addition describes the complaint and the remedy instead. The aircon is not cooling, gas will go in, cooling will improve. Every part of that is probably true. None of it says what the circuit will be carrying afterwards, and that missing sentence is the one to listen for.

Starting from a history you already have

An owner with several additions behind them is not stuck with the blank. A record can be created at any point, and one recharge produces the figure every visit so far has failed to leave behind.

Doing it alongside other work takes less arranging than doing it on its own. Circuits get emptied for several reasons: a repair on the refrigerant side, a compressor swap, a relocation. Where one of those is already booked, the system comes back carrying a stated quantity as part of that job rather than as a separate errand.
