Mitsubishi Electric vs Midea aircon: the year-seven divide
Five ticks on both labels, S$16 between them, and no cost argument left standing. What remains is parts waiting time, two different recorded lifespans, and a seventh-year board fault worth repairing on one side only.

Where each badge actually turns up in Singapore
The catalogue files Midea in the budget tier with growing market presence, common in rental units and newer BTO fit-outs. Mitsubishi Electric sits in the premium tier with strong presence across HDB, condo and landed homes. One is priced for the install, the other for what it is worth repairing eight years later.
One thing needs settling first. Three Mitsubishi Electric families are sold here and only the residential one is in scope. That one is Starmex. Cassette, ducted and ceiling-suspended equipment carries the Mr Slim name, and large commercial VRF carries City Multi. Read everything below as Starmex.
Midea's local lines are shorter to lay out. All Easy Pro is recorded as the main residential inverter line, and the Midea system most often fitted into HDB flats. Xtreme Save is the budget-focused line, common in rental properties and value-driven replacements. A multi-split line covers BTO work where the contractor has standardised on the brand.
Range breadth settles some jobs before anything else gets a hearing. The recorded Midea range covers split, multi-split, inverter and non-inverter systems. Mitsubishi Electric adds cassette, ducted, ceiling-suspended and VRF formats on top.
Do the two labels actually differ at 3.6 kW?
Two registered rows carry this, one from each side. The NEA register carries the Mitsubishi Electric MUY-GA13VF, a single-split unit rated 3.61 kW, five ticks, 1,407 kWh a year and S$380 on the label. Midea's MAS-1S12D is also a single split, rated 3.59 kW, five ticks, 1,466 kWh and S$396. Sixteen dollars a year separates the two.
Capacity does not explain that gap. The two units sit 0.02 kW apart and carry the same five ticks, so running costs are comparable at matched capacity and tick rating. Both dollar figures rest on one published assumption: eight hours of daily running at 27 cents a kilowatt-hour. Drop an hour off that and each figure falls by roughly fifty dollars, three times the gap between them. There is no electricity case for either brand at this size, and this page does not make one.
The readings behind the two five-tick ratings do not move together. Weighted performance is 5.66 on the Mitsubishi Electric against 5.50 on the Midea, full load 4.90 against 4.47, part load 6.17 against 6.18. The register blends those into one weighted score, which is why both land on five ticks.
Each brand puts more distance between its own rows than sits between the two brands. Midea registers MPAG-1S12D at the identical 3.59 kW with four ticks and S$393, then MGP-1S12D at 3.52 kW and S$416. Mitsubishi Electric's MUY-GP13VF, 3.73 kW at four ticks, reaches S$418 against its own S$380. Choosing badly inside either range costs more than choosing between the ranges, so write the full string off the condenser plate before comparing anything.
Year seven, where the two records contradict each other
Parts supply is where the two first come apart. The catalogue rates Mitsubishi Electric Good and Midea Moderate. Starmex components stay obtainable through local channels out to roughly the ten or twelve year mark. Common Midea parts are increasingly held here as well. The recorded exception is boards for older Midea series, which take longer to source than the Japanese-brand equivalent.
Recorded service life pushes the same way, 8 to 12 years for residential Starmex against 6 to 10 for Midea. Those bands overlap through the middle, so the difference only bites at the ends. At ten years one system is mid-life and the other is finishing. The repair-or-replace guidance breaks at different ages too. Mitsubishi Electric splits at 5, 8 and 12 years. Midea splits at 3, 5 and 7.
Put a seven-year-old system in front of both records and they disagree openly. The Starmex sits mid-band, where most repairs are still rated worthwhile and only compressor failure changes the answer. Seven years is the top edge of Midea's third band, and there a failed PCB or compressor is already recorded as approaching what a replacement costs. One year further on, major component failures almost always favour replacing the Midea.
Purchase price drives that, not build quality, and the Midea record says as much. A lower entry price pulls the repair threshold forward, because the replacement being weighed against the repair costs less to begin with.
At the young end the Midea record is the more instructive of the two. Below three years it says repair, and check warranty cover first, because early faults usually trace back to how the unit was fitted. Take that literally at a BTO handover. Servicing adds nothing to the choice, because both records carry the same cadence for filters, general work, chemical work and pressure checks.

Boards and bearings against pressure and water
Two of the recorded Mitsubishi Electric faults sit on the boards. E6 reports a protection trip on the inverter board or on the compressor, logged on Starmex systems past the eight-year mark. That is exactly where the third repair band opens, so an E6 at nine years is a costing question wearing a fault code. PCB failure is listed on its own, indoor or outdoor, sometimes triggered by a power surge and sometimes by age-related component drift.
Outdoor compressor noise sits on the same list, with bearing wear, loose mounting and refrigerant issues recorded as causes and no ranking between them. Noise alone names no part, so the condenser has to be opened before anyone puts a figure on the work.
Communication faults appear on both records, so the useful detail is where each one places them. On ageing Starmex multi-splits they develop along the link between indoor and outdoor units as wiring degrades. The symptom is selective: one room faulting while every other room stays cold puts the problem inside that unit. The Midea record names sensor drift and faults on the same indoor-outdoor link as frequently reported, without tying either to a system layout.
Midea's list otherwise gathers around pressure and water. E1 and P1 report a sensor fault or high-pressure protection, with airflow restriction, dirty coils and gas as the recorded checks. All three send the first look to the outdoor coil and the airflow path rather than to the board.
Drainage recurrence is the Midea pattern worth planning around. Condensate overflow and blocked drain lines carry a rider on the record: how often the fault returns depends on the quality of the original fitting. A Midea drain blocking again after a clear is a routing problem, and clearing it a third time will not answer it. The same rider covers early weak cooling and outdoor noise, where gas charge, drain routing, pipe joints, mounting and fan blade balance are checked ahead of the hardware.
Fault reporting is what a homeowner runs into first, and here it favours the premium side. Mitsubishi Electric is recorded as using panel codes and blink patterns together. Many residential Midea models offer blinking lights alone, with no alphanumeric code to read out. Film the indoor LED for a full cycle before cutting power, because a sequence recalled from memory is not evidence. Blink accuracy matters on Starmex too, since its multi-split indoor range holds a separate recall sequence.
Two more entries sit on both lists and rank neither brand. Weak cooling without a code is on both, gas-related or down to coil fouling. Drainage is on both, named outright by Midea and carried on the Starmex side as a biofilm note.
The verdict, and the one input that overturns it
Buy the Mitsubishi Electric for a home you own and intend to hold. Every structured field that separates this pair points the same way, and electricity is not one of them. Repair stays the default answer at year eight, by which point the Midea record has already turned towards replacement.
Buy the Midea where the holding period is genuinely short, and be strict about which situations qualify. A tenanted flat. A home due to be sold within a few years. A BTO where Midea came as the contractor's brand and the system remains under warranty. The under-three-year guidance, repair and check warranty first, fits that horizon exactly. Budget for a replacement rather than a major repair at the far end.
Running cost enters neither call. Sixteen dollars a year works out to four dollars a quarter, and it is smaller than the S$23 that separates two Midea single splits of near-identical size. The decision lives in year seven.
One input can overturn the Midea call, and the record keeps naming it. Installation quality drives the faults this brand is most associated with locally, drainage recurrence and early weak cooling among them. A contractor who fits that exact outdoor unit regularly takes most of that recorded risk off the table.
Two questions at the quote stage settle more than any badge argument. Ask which outdoor code is going in, and how many of them the dealer has commissioned. Then ask which supplier holds the boards for it, and roughly how long one takes to land. On a budget-tier system that second answer shapes whether year six ends in a repair or a replacement.
The comparison also closes early in two cases. A home wanting ducted or ceiling-suspended equipment has one candidate, because the recorded Midea range stops short of those formats. A multi-split being extended rather than replaced has none, because the condenser already on the ledge chose the brand years ago.
