Mitsubishi Electric vs Fujitsu aircon: parts and lifespan
Fujitsu carries the longer recorded lifespan. Mitsubishi Electric carries the parts supply and the wider service network. That inverts the usual premium-versus-mid assumption, and it changes which brand is the safer buy at year nine.

In Singapore the Mitsubishi Electric residential line is sold as Starmex. It sits in the premium tier, holds strong market presence, and is widely installed across HDB flats, condos and landed homes. Fujitsu General sits one tier below on price with moderate presence, and it is common in condos and landed homes. Both are Japanese, both use compact indoor units, and both stay quiet at low fan speed.
The tier gap is a positioning gap, not a build gap. Fujitsu offers comparable build quality at a lower price point. What separates the two brands is everything after the sale. How quickly a board arrives, how wide the service network behind the badge reaches, and how many years pass before replacing the system beats repairing it.
Range breadth splits them too, and it only matters on some jobs. The Mitsubishi Electric catalogue here spans split, multi-split, inverter, ceiling cassette, ducted, ceiling suspended and commercial VRF. The Fujitsu range recorded here stops at split, multi-split, inverter and ceiling cassette. For a wall-mount job in a flat or a condo bedroom, that changes nothing. For a home that needs ducted or ceiling-suspended units, it ends the comparison before it starts.
Mitsubishi Electric also complicates the badge in a way Fujitsu does not. Starmex is the residential label. Mr Slim covers cassette, ducted and ceiling-suspended equipment, and City Multi is commercial VRF. Those families report faults through separate tables, so a quote that says only Mitsubishi Electric has not told you which family you are buying. Fujitsu keeps a shorter residential list: ASAG wall-mount units, AUXG cassettes, and AOTG or AOYG outdoor units above them.
Neither brand lets you skip the model number. Two Mitsubishi Electric outdoor units two letters apart, MUY-GA13VF and MUY-GP13VF, are registered at 3.61 kW and 3.73 kW, at five ticks and four, and at S$380 and S$418 a year. Every running-cost figure below is registered against one specific code rather than against a brand. Read the sticker on the outdoor unit before comparing anything, then compare the registered entries.
What do two registered multi-splits cost to run?
Take one registered model on each side instead of a brand average. The NEA registry lists the Mitsubishi Electric MXY-3H28VG2 as a multi-split rated at 6.45 kW cooling, 5 ticks, 2,389 kWh a year, and S$645 on the label. The Fujitsu AOAH24CBTA3 is also a multi-split, rated at 6.17 kW, 5 ticks, 2,132 kWh a year, and S$576. The label gap between the two is S$69 a year.
The two units are not the same size, so some of that gap is capacity rather than efficiency. The Mitsubishi Electric entry is 0.28 kW larger. Divide each energy figure by its cooling output and the Fujitsu still reads lower, at roughly 346 kWh per kilowatt against 370. That is arithmetic on two published numbers. The registry publishes no size-adjusted rating, so treat it as a sanity check and not as an NEA figure. Both label figures also run on the same tariff assumption, so the S$69 is a difference in consumption rather than in electricity price. Check the tariff your household actually pays before reading it as a bill forecast.
Both units hold five ticks, and the efficiency readings behind the ticks trade places. The registry gives the Fujitsu a weighted COP of 6.22 against 6.07 for the Mitsubishi Electric. At full load the Fujitsu leads more clearly, 5.44 against 4.86. At part load the order flips, with the Mitsubishi Electric at 6.87 and the Fujitsu at 6.74. The weighted figure already blends both readings, and that blend is what sets the tick rating.
The registry does not separate these models by series, and neither code maps cleanly onto the lines named in either brand's Singapore literature. MXY is the Starmex multi-split outdoor prefix. AOAH is not one of the AOTG or AOYG codes recorded for Fujitsu here, so read it as a registry record rather than a line recommendation.
The two entries also carry different expiry dates. Registration on the Mitsubishi Electric code runs to January 2029 and the Fujitsu code to July 2028. Those dates govern the registry listing itself. They say nothing about warranty length and nothing about how long either unit will last.
S$69 a year clears the level worth counting, and on this pair it points the wrong way for the premium brand. By itself that gap does not justify switching brands. It does justify refusing to pay a premium on efficiency grounds, because across these two registered codes the efficiency argument favours the cheaper side.
That result belongs to the pair, not to the badge. Move down to single splits of about the same size and it reverses. The Mitsubishi Electric MUY-GA24VF is registered at 6.01 kW and S$643 a year; the Fujitsu AOAG24CMTA is registered at 6.20 kW and S$664. Divide each by its cooling output and they land level, at roughly 397 kWh per kilowatt on both sides. The registry holds pairs running in both directions, so treat the S$69 as a fact about two model codes rather than a reason to prefer one brand.
Parts supply, lifespan, and the repair window
Parts availability separates these two brands more than any other field. Mitsubishi Electric rates Good, Fujitsu rates Moderate. Starmex components for models up to ten or twelve years old move through local channels without much friction. Fujitsu components move through local distributors too, at a slower pace than Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric manage. Beyond ten years, the wait lengthens most on uncommon items, outdoor boards and fan motors among them.
Lifespan runs the other way. Starmex residential systems are recorded at 8 to 12 years. Fujitsu is recorded at 10 to 14. The longer-lived brand is the one with the slower parts pipeline. At year twelve a Fujitsu still sits inside its recorded band while a Starmex sits at the top of its, and that is the same point at which Fujitsu parts get hardest to source.
The repair-or-replace age bands are identical on both sides: under 5 years, 5 to 8, 8 to 12, and over 12. Both records break the decision at the same four points. What differs is what each one says about the third band. On a Starmex it names the outdoor inverter board, and once that board fails the gap between repairing and replacing narrows.
On a Fujitsu the same band names PCB and fan motor failures, adds that parts sourcing may take longer, and asks for the same repair-versus-replace weigh-up with any efficiency drop factored in. So the Fujitsu band carries one variable the Starmex band does not, and that variable is the wait. It shifts the question worth asking a technician. On a Starmex at year nine, ask what the inverter board costs. On a Fujitsu at year nine, ask that and how long the part takes to land.
Servicing cadence is not a tiebreaker between these two. Both brands sit on the same recorded rhythm. Filters every two to four weeks, general servicing every three to four months, chemical servicing every twelve to eighteen months, and a refrigerant pressure check whenever cooling weakens. What differs is the penalty for skipping it. Fujitsu indoor coils are compact, so dust restricting airflow drags performance down faster than on larger units. Starmex coils in humid bedrooms build biofilm quickly, and that is what feeds the drainage complaints.

What each brand tends to throw at a technician
Mitsubishi Electric's recurring residential faults cluster on the inverter side. E6 flags protection tripping on the inverter board or the compressor, and it turns up on Starmex systems past eight years. Compressor noise from the outdoor unit sits alongside it, pointing at bearing wear, loose mounting, or a refrigerant issue. Neither necessarily arrives as a printed code.
That reporting habit is itself a Starmex trait worth planning for. Unlike Daikin, Starmex signals most faults through LED blink patterns instead of a display code. Count the sequence carefully, or record a short video of the indoor unit before switching anything off. Blink-count accuracy carries more weight on this brand than on the ones that print a code, because the multi-split indoor line runs its own recall sequence.
Fujitsu's list is built differently. Thermistor faults sit on it, showing as sensor drift, erratic cycling, wrong temperature readings, or a system that shuts itself down. Outdoor fan motor failure sits on it too, where the motor seizes or runs intermittently until the system overheats and drops into protection mode. So does communication error between indoor and outdoor units, usually traced to wiring degradation, loose terminals, or a board-side fault. The record does not rank them, so read these as the recurring three rather than a frequency order.
Communication faults deserve one caveat, because they are not exclusive. Fujitsu carries it as a named entry on its fault list. Mitsubishi Electric raises the same failure only as an ageing-wiring note on older multi-splits. That is a difference of weight rather than a difference of kind, so weigh it lightly.
One diagnostic rule holds on both brands, and following it saves an unnecessary outdoor callout. In a multi-split, a single indoor unit can fault while every other room keeps cooling. That points inside the faulty unit. Check its thermistor, its board and its wiring before anyone opens the condenser. Both brand records state that rule in almost identical terms, which makes it a multi-split trait rather than a Mitsubishi Electric or Fujitsu one.
Two faults appear on both records and neither helps you choose. PCB failure sits on both, though the recorded ages differ: Fujitsu boards are noted as more frequent beyond seven to eight years, and Mitsubishi Electric records inverter board failures beyond eight to ten. Drainage sits on both as well, on the Fujitsu fault list directly and on the Mitsubishi Electric record as a servicing and installation-routing note. Anyone using a board fault or a blocked drain to rank one brand above the other is arguing past the data.
Pick by what you plan to do with the unit
Buy Mitsubishi Electric if the job is a standard wall-mount install in a flat or a mass-market condo, and the plan is to replace the system rather than nurse it. Components land faster. The service network behind the badge is the wider of the two. That eight-to-twelve-year window then reads as a replacement horizon rather than a disappointment. The replacement conversation lands while parts are still easy.
Buy Fujitsu if the plan is to keep the system past a decade. The recorded lifespan is the longer one, and on the multi-split pair above the label cost was lower too. That pairing rewards an owner who maintains the unit on schedule. Compact coils lose performance to dust faster than larger ones do. Filter cleaning every two to four weeks and chemical servicing every twelve to eighteen months is the price of that longer life.
Do not choose Fujitsu for the S$69. The gap is real on those two codes and it clears the level worth counting, but it is one line in a decision that also holds parts wait time, service network reach and range fit. Choose Fujitsu for the recorded lifespan and the quiet bedroom operation, then bank the label saving as a bonus rather than a reason.
Two questions settle most of this at the quote stage. Ask the dealer how many of that exact outdoor model they have commissioned. Then ask where the indoor and outdoor boards for it are sourced. An answer naming a supplier and a rough wait tells you what year nine looks like on that system. An answer that stops at the brand name is a quote for a badge.
The comparison closes early in two situations. If the home needs ducted or ceiling-suspended indoor units, the Mitsubishi Electric range here covers that and the Fujitsu range recorded here does not.
