PRISM+ vs Mitsubishi Electric aircon: the repair window
Two five-tick multi-splits at the same size sit five dollars apart on the annual label. Ignore that number. The choice turns on how fast a board arrives, how long each brand is recorded to last, and when repairing one stops paying.

Who each of these two is built for
These two brands answer different questions, and the quote sheet is where they meet. Mitsubishi Electric is a Japanese manufacturer in the premium tier, and its Starmex range is installed across the full spread of local housing types. PRISM+ began as a Singapore consumer electronics label and reached aircon later, competing on entry price and on app control. Its market presence is recorded as growing rather than strong.
One badge, three families. Starmex is the residential label sold here. Mr Slim covers ceiling-suspended, ducted and cassette equipment, while City Multi covers commercial VRF. Those families carry separate fault tables, so a quotation ending at the manufacturer name has not said which parts channel it commits you to. Everything below about Mitsubishi Electric describes Starmex.
The PRISM+ side is shorter to describe. Its catalogue records split and inverter systems, nothing wider, and the residential inverter range carries app scheduling plus energy monitoring. The register nonetheless carries PRISM+ multi-split rows, and one of those is compared below. A model code on a register beats a range summary.
The two registered rows land five dollars apart
Two registered codes, one from each brand, beat any average. The PRISM+ PRCZ28 appears as a multi-split at 6.5 kW cooling, five ticks, 2,406 kWh a year, S$650 on the label. Mitsubishi Electric's MXY-3H28VG2 is a multi-split too, at 6.45 kW, five ticks, 2,389 kWh, S$645. Capacity differs by 0.05 kW and the label by S$5.
Neither dollar figure is measured. Both are computed from a single tariff and a single usage assumption the register applies to every row: 27 cents a kilowatt-hour, eight hours of cooling a day. On the PRCZ28 that is roughly 301 kWh, or S$81, for each hour of daily use. Run either unit an hour beyond the label assumption and the bill moves sixteen times further than the badge does.
Behind two identical tick ratings, the efficiency figures do not match. At full load the PRISM+ row reads 5.46 against 4.86 for the Mitsubishi Electric. At part load the order reverses, 6.87 for the Mitsubishi Electric against 6.07. The weighted figure the register publishes puts the Mitsubishi Electric at 6.07 and the PRISM+ at 5.83.
That is the whole cost story and it does not pick a side. At matched capacity and matched tick rating, these two cost effectively the same to run, and nothing here recommends one over the other on five dollars. The second PRISM+ multi-split in the band, the PRCN28 at 6.3 kW, registers at S$669. That is S$19 above the PRCZ28, still under a quarter of one extra hour of daily use.
Compare codes, never badges. An earlier Mitsubishi Electric registration of the same outdoor family, the MXY-3H28VG, sits at 6.56 kW and S$653 a year. One character divides the two strings. Copy the full string off the outdoor sticker, because the register is indexed on the code and not on the name above it.
Registration on the two rows expires in different years, January 2028 for the PRISM+ entry and January 2029 for the Mitsubishi Electric one. Expiry applies to the label listing. It carries no statement about service life and none about warranty.
Parts, years, and when a repair stops paying
Parts supply is the first real divergence. The rating reads Good for Mitsubishi Electric and Moderate for PRISM+. Local channels generally carry Starmex components until a system is around ten to twelve years old. On the PRISM+ side, consumables such as filters and sensors are normally stocked, while boards and compressor parts can require a distributor order.
Diagnosis time widens the same gap. The PRISM+ record is explicit that fewer local technicians read its boards and its code meanings as fluently as they read Daikin's or Mitsubishi Electric's. That cost lands on the visit rather than on the invoice. Booking with the full model code and anything showing on the display shortens it.
Service life on record differs by two years at each end. The Starmex residential figure spans eight to twelve years. PRISM+ spans six to ten.
Each brand also breaks the repair or replace question at different ages. PRISM+ breaks its guidance at two years, four years and six. Mitsubishi Electric breaks Starmex at five, eight and twelve. Six years divides the two final edges.
Set one age against both and the abstraction disappears. A seven-year-old PRISM+ has passed its last edge, where major failures generally favour replacement. A seven-year-old Starmex sits mid-band, where repairs stay cost-effective and only a compressor failure would change the answer. One age, two opposite instructions.
Age alone is not the test. A control board is what moves the decision, and each record sets it against a different yardstick. The PRISM+ guidance weighs a board repair against the original purchase price, and at five years already calls it borderline. The Starmex guidance weighs a failed outdoor board against the cost of a new system, and does not reach that point until year eight.
Servicing cadence separates nothing. Both published schedules run to the same intervals. Filters come out every two to four weeks. Chemical work runs every twelve to eighteen months. General servicing lands every three to four months, and gas pressure gets checked when cooling weakens.

Faults that belong to one side only
PRISM+ owns a fault category the Mitsubishi Electric record does not list. Its smart module loses connection, or refuses to pair again after a firmware update. Cutting power to the indoor unit and pairing afresh in the app resolves most cases. Anything surviving that points to the module, which is replaceable.
A drifting temperature sensor is the second PRISM+ pattern with no entry on the Mitsubishi Electric common-fault list. It makes the unit short-cycle, or leaves a room stuck above its set point. The record ties it disproportionately to indoor panels sitting in direct sunlight, so where the unit hangs becomes part of the diagnosis. Mention afternoon sun when booking.
The Mitsubishi Electric entries are mechanical and electrical by comparison. E6 signals protection on the compressor or the inverter board, and the record attaches it to Starmex systems beyond their eighth year. That age coincides with the third repair band, where an outdoor board failure closes the distance between fixing and replacing. E6 on a nine-year-old Starmex is a costing exercise.
Fault reporting runs opposite to expectation on this pair. PRISM+ shows a code on the panel. The Mitsubishi Electric record covers both, and Starmex indoor units often blink without showing a code. So the newer brand prints something fewer local technicians read fluently, and the established brand frequently prints nothing.
Send different things depending on which one you own. For PRISM+, photograph the panel and pass the code on with the complete model number, so a board layout can be pulled up beforehand. For Starmex, count the blink sequence, or film it briefly before anyone kills the power. The MSXY-FN multi-split indoor line carries its own recall sequence, so the count has to be accurate.
Older Starmex multi-splits add one pattern of their own. Wiring ages and the link back to the condenser develops communication faults. If a single indoor unit faults while the rest still cool, the problem is usually local to that unit rather than the shared outdoor box.
Drainage and outdoor noise appear on both records and rank nothing. Each follows from installation work rather than from the badge on the box. Judging these two on a water stain or a buzzing condenser measures the fitter.
Which one to buy, and when that flips
For a system you plan to keep, buy the Mitsubishi Electric. The parts rating is a band higher. Service life on record is two years longer at both ends. Replacement only becomes the usual answer past year twelve, against year six for PRISM+. Three fields agree, and running cost abstains.
Running cost cannot repay a purchase-price difference here. At S$5 a year, a decade of ownership returns S$50. Decide on the price you are quoted, not on the label.
Several situations still point at PRISM+, and they are ordinary ones. A tenanted flat, where the landlord will not be holding the year-eight repair. A fit-out budget already committed elsewhere. A plan to move or replace inside roughly six years. A household that will use app scheduling and monitoring rather than admire it. In each, the shorter band expires after the owner's interest does.
Settle two things before either quote gets signed. Put the complete outdoor code in writing, since both brands register several rows near this capacity. Then establish which Mitsubishi Electric family is being quoted, because Starmex, Mr Slim and City Multi differ in fault tables and in parts routes.
One structural note covers both named models. Each is registered as a multi-split, so a single outdoor unit sits behind every room on the system. The Mitsubishi Electric record puts two to five indoor units on one Starmex outdoor box. Check room count against rated capacity before accepting either quote.
