Mitsubishi Heavy vs Panasonic aircon: parts decide it
Both are mid-tier Japanese splits, both documented at 8 to 12 years, and matched on capacity they cost about the same to run. The separation is what happens after a fault: how fast the part arrives, and how the unit reports the problem.

Two mid-tier Japanese splits, one real difference
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Panasonic are priced in the same tier and carry the same documented 8 to 12 year service life. Both are Japanese, and both are sold here as single-split, multi-split and inverter systems. None of that decides a purchase.
Mitsubishi Heavy suits a household that already has a technician who knows the brand. The SRK wall-mount line is the residential unit seen locally, and the build is solid at the price. What comes with it is thinner local support: market presence rated moderate, and a line many technicians here see less often.
Panasonic suits a household that wants the shortest route from fault to fixed. Market presence is rated strong, and the brand turns up often in BTO and resale flat installs. The XU line sits at the top of its wall-mount range, carrying nanoe X air purification, AEROWINGS airflow and built-in Wi-Fi.
One thing to settle before comparing quotes. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is not Mitsubishi Electric. The two are unrelated companies: different parts, different fault codes, different service networks. Ask any quote naming only Mitsubishi which of the two it means.
The registered numbers, and what they do not decide
Take two registered models of the same size. The MHI SRC10YYS-W8 is a single-split unit rated 2.53 kW cooling, 5 ticks, 993 kWh a year, S$268 on the NEA label. The Panasonic CU-XU9BKZ registers at 2.59 kW, 5 ticks, 1,022 kWh, S$276. That is S$8 a year between them.
Step up a size and the gap stays small. The MHI SRC13YYS3-W8 sits at 3.49 kW, 5 ticks, S$374. The Panasonic CU-XU12XKZ sits at 3.63 kW, 5 ticks, S$397, which is S$23 apart on a unit carrying 0.14 kW more cooling capacity. Matched on capacity and tick rating, these two cost the same to run. Nobody should change brand on that figure.
The registry splits efficiency into two readings, and these two trade places between them. On the 2.5 kW pair, MHI scores 4.80 at full load against Panasonic's 4.52, while Panasonic returns 6.40 at part load against MHI's 6.06. Full load is the unit pulling a hot room down; part load is it holding a setpoint overnight. Weighted, Panasonic edges ahead at 5.65 to 5.56.
Those costs model eight hours of daily use at 27 cents per kWh, so a household running the unit differently gets a different number. Both models carry 5 ticks, the top band in the registry.
None of it applies unless the model number on the quote matches the unit. MHI holds 21 registrations in the current snapshot and Panasonic 17, spanning several capacities and both the 4 and 5 tick bands. A brand name alone says nothing about capacity, consumption or annual cost.
What happens after the fault: parts and service life
Parts availability is the one structured field where these two genuinely separate. Panasonic is rated excellent in Singapore. MHI is rated moderate. Both hold the same 8 to 12 year service life, so this is not a durability gap. It is a waiting gap, and it shows up only on the day something fails.
MHI's own repair-versus-replace guidance names that gap. At 8 to 10 years it puts sourcing delay ahead of board price: waiting for the component can cost more than replacing the system. The decision at that age turns on lead time.
Panasonic's guidance at the same age reads differently. There the question is cost. A PCB or compressor failure starts to approach what a new system costs, so get a proper diagnosis before either quote is signed. Parts for current and recent models are well stocked. Pre-2016 models are the exception, where less common boards and motor variants need longer lead times.
Below that band the two behave alike. Under 5 years both call for repair, since faults at that age are minor. From 5 to 8 years repair stays the default on either side, with a carve-out for compressor or inverter-board failure. Past 10 years both point to replacement, on falling parts availability and lost efficiency.
Maintenance cadence sits close. Panasonic asks for filter cleaning every 2 weeks, MHI every 2 to 4 weeks. General servicing runs every 3 to 4 months on both, and chemical servicing at 12 to 18 month intervals on both. The filter interval is the only difference, and it matters most where cleanings slip.
The faults that belong to each side
MHI's recurring faults start with the E1 and E3 sensor codes. Both are thermistor problems affecting room or coil temperature sensing, and they are common in older units. The code shows on the display, so read it off the panel before calling anyone.
Compressor lockout is the second MHI pattern. The outdoor unit shuts down under high ambient load, or because of a refrigerant problem, and from inside the room the two look identical. Isolating which one applies needs an on-site diagnosis, not a code reading.
PCB failure is the third, and it sets the age limit. Control board problems become more common past 7 to 8 years, and on MHI the board sourcing time binds before the board price does. A board fault on a nine-year-old MHI unit is a replacement conversation.
Panasonic's signature fault is H11, a communication fault between the indoor and outdoor units. The check runs to wiring connections first, then PCB status. It reads straight off the display, so a homeowner can report the exact code before the technician arrives.
Indoor fan motor failure is the second Panasonic pattern, and the easier one to misread. The motor burns out or the bearings go, and the unit keeps running while moving little or no air. That presents as weak cooling and invites a gas diagnosis. Past 6 to 7 years, check the fan motor before paying for a top-up.
The two also report faults differently. MHI shows a display code. Panasonic shows a display code and an LED blinking pattern on the indoor unit, which matters on the day the display cannot be read. Drainage blockage sits on both lists and separates nothing, being the same tropical humidity pattern seen across all brands in Singapore.
The pick, and the cases that override it
Pick Panasonic by default. The two match on price tier, on system formats and on service life, and at matched capacity they cost the same to run. Panasonic wins the axis left standing, the one that bites on the day the unit stops. Excellent parts availability, two routes into reading a fault, and the stronger market presence of the pair.
Two situations override that. The first is an existing MHI multi-split. Adding a room to a shared outdoor unit is a question about that outdoor unit, so ask what the installed system accepts before shortlisting anything. The second is a technician who already services MHI and reads its codes without a manual. That relationship outweighs a parts rating.
A ceiling install is its own question. MHI's FDT and FDC cassette family is documented for larger residential and commercial spaces where wall mounting is not practical. Panasonic's documented ceiling option is a different shape: the XS slim ducted CS-MU line, ceiling-concealed at 200mm and carrying its own drain pump. Ask which suits the ceiling void before assuming the wall-mount answer transfers.
Note what the registry does not settle. It carries capacity, tick rating, efficiency and modelled annual consumption. It says nothing about noise, build quality, indoor unit dimensions, or how a unit behaves after eight years on a west-facing ledge.
Sizing and installation still outrank the brand choice. A correctly sized MHI unit in the right room beats an oversized Panasonic, and the reverse holds too. Settle those first, then use the table below.
