Packaged aircon explained: the word names two machines
A quote or a catalogue calls something a packaged unit, and the word sounds like a specification. It describes two machines that share almost nothing. Which one sits in front of you decides what the job involves.

The word points at two different machines
Two manuals from one manufacturer settle this faster than a definition can. Mitsubishi Electric's operation manual for its PKA-M and PCA-M indoor units carries the heading Packaged Air Conditioners on the cover, printed directly above the words Indoor unit. An indoor unit is half of a split system. The same maker's installation manual for the PKA-A series opens with Split-system heat pump instead, and sends the installer to the outdoor unit installation manual as well.
That trade-line use of the word is deliberate, and more than one maker publishes under it. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries lists a product category called Packaged Air-conditioners, described as suited to offices, shops and restaurants. Everything in it is split equipment: ceiling cassettes, ducted units, wall-mounted, ceiling suspended and floor standing indoor units, each working with a separate outdoor unit. Trane's Japanese site defines the term the same way, as a packaged air conditioner that pairs an outdoor unit with an indoor one.
The literal sense is alive as well, and printed on covers of its own. Daikin titles the UATYQ installation manual Rooftop Packaged Unit, and its product description calls these high efficiency, self-contained air conditioners. Nothing about that machine is divided across two enclosures. The refrigeration circuit sits inside one casing and arrives on site already charged.
Both uses are old, and neither is a corruption of the other. Daikin dates its own first packaged air conditioner to 1951, and describes what was new about it: turn-key operation through automatic control of the compressor, condenser and fan, where earlier equipment demanded high expertise from design and installation through to running it. The name attached itself to a class of factory-finished commercial machines. Whether the modern product-line label descends straight from that is not something the published record settles, so the safer reading is that two senses have simply run side by side for decades.
The word alone therefore tells a reader almost nothing about the equipment. What it does signal is the channel the document came from, because both readings live in commercial and light-commercial literature. The useful move is to stop reading the cover and open the contents page.
What a self-contained packaged unit is
The literal machine holds its entire refrigeration circuit in one casing and leaves the factory that way. Daikin describes the UATYQ rooftop range as made in two sections that are joined together but functionally separate. One section moves heat taken out of the treated space into the atmosphere. The other handles the air being delivered to that space. Both sit in the same body.
Commissioning confirms the circuit was closed before delivery. All the units are pre-charged with refrigerant gas, so the refrigerant circuit is pressurised, the manual states at first start. The checks that follow are a gauge reading and a leak hunt, with oil stains named as a sign worth chasing. No charge gets calculated on site and no joint gets made.
What the installer connects instead is short and specific. The units are sent from the factory already tested and they need only the electrical, aeraulic and hydraulic connections. Aeraulic means air, which is a return duct and a supply duct. Hydraulic covers the condensate drain, which has to carry a syphon at least 100 mm deep so outside air cannot be drawn back through it.
A much smaller version of the same idea sits in a wall. A packaged terminal air conditioner is a chassis that slides into a wall sleeve with an outdoor grille behind it. Its installation instructions have the fitter lift the unit level and slide it in until it seats against the front of the sleeve, then fix it with four screws. Its only site connection is a power cord. A window unit belongs to this family too, and carries its own set of consequences.
One property is all the literal sense guarantees, and it is this: the circuit is complete inside a single body. Everything else varies wildly across the family, including where the machine stands and how its air reaches a room. A rooftop machine and a wall chassis have little in common beyond that one fact.
What changes when the circuit never leaves the box
The difference an owner meets first is what has to be run between the parts. A split system needs a refrigerant pipe route joining two enclosures, made and charged on site. The one-box machine needs air and power in its place. Ducts have to be sized so that pressure losses do not drag air flow below the design figure, and Daikin asks that the ducting be at least as large as the return inlet and supply outlet on the unit.
Siting rules get heavier, because the machine is heavier and louder. That manual asks for a flat, horizontal base roughly 15 to 20 cm above the surrounding ground, able to bear at least four times the operating weight of the unit, and at least 30 cm longer and wider than the machine itself. Units are to be installed a minimum of three metres apart.
Recirculation is the failure that poor siting causes. Avoiding recirculation between suction and delivery matters because the alternative lowers performance or stops normal operation outright. High walls nearby impair correct operation. Windy sites need windbreaks fitted. Dark surfaces such as tar are ruled out to avoid overtemperature during use, and canopies and nearby plants are ruled out for the recirculation reason again.
Noise gets decided by where the machine goes. The manual states that these units should not be positioned near private offices, bedrooms or areas where low sound emissions are required. Everything that makes noise on the outdoor half of a split system lives in this body, and so does everything that makes noise on the indoor half. Narrow passages and small spaces are ruled out too, for reverberation and resonance.
Servicing runs the opposite way from a split as well. Nothing sits above a ceiling and nothing waits on a distant ledge, so a technician works at one machine. The trade for that is the machine's own position, on a roof or a plant deck reached by whatever access the building provides. Removing larger components such as heat exchangers and compressors needs space left between machines, which the manual advises allowing for at install.

How to read the word on a document in front of you
The contents page settles what the cover will not. A section headed installing the refrigerant piping means field joints between two enclosures, and that section cannot exist for a machine whose circuit never leaves the factory. Mitsubishi Electric's split-system installation manual carries exactly that section, with flare nuts, torque figures and on-site cooling pipes.
What the document sends you to read next is the second tell. A manual instructing the installer to read the outdoor unit installation manual before starting is describing half a system. The other half is a separate book, a separate model number and a separate position on site.
Duct language is the third. A self-contained unit's manual carries a section on return and supply ducts, and tells the installer to remove shipping panels before making the connection. On a split system, ductwork belongs to whichever indoor unit was chosen, and plenty of indoor units have none. On the one-box machine the ducts are the format, because the machine has no other way to reach a room.
A fourth tell waits at commissioning. Daikin's rooftop manual has the technician check a liquid sight glass for a green ring after some hours of running, treating a yellow ring as moisture in the circuit and a steady stream of bubbles as a sign the charge is short. It also makes a maintenance register mandatory, recording the refrigerant type and every job done on the unit. A machine handed over with a charge nobody on site created needs that register, because it is where its history begins.
Push back on any quote using the word without one of those tells behind it. A line item reading packaged unit has not said what is being priced, and the two readings carry different cost drivers. Ask which manual the model number appears in. If the answer is an indoor unit manual with a separate outdoor manual behind it, the job is a split installation wearing a trade label, and the pipe route and condenser position are what the price turns on.
Parts ordering falls into the same hole. One word covering two machines means two parts trees, and a supplier searching the wrong one either returns nothing or returns something that will not fit. The model plate settles that in a way the word never will.

What the word is likely to mean in Singapore
For a reader here, the trade-line sense is the likelier one. Two of the manufacturers whose commercial split ranges reach this region publish those ranges under the packaged heading, so a document carrying the word is most often naming a line of splits sold to the commercial channel. The equipment behind it is an indoor unit and an outdoor unit, priced and installed as such.
The regulated-goods list leaves the literal machine no place at all. NEA's first entry names room air-conditioners that run on a single-phase supply and carry no ducts. Its caps are set by type: 8.8 kW for the casement or window type, and 17.6 kW for split types. A single-phase portable unit at 12 kW or lower forms a second entry. A three-phase variable refrigerant flow base module forms a third, at any cooling capacity. A self-contained rooftop machine is ducted, which rules out the first entry, and it matches neither of the others.
That absence has a practical edge. No energy label, no tick rating and no registered-model lookup exist for a machine of this kind, so any efficiency claim has to be read out of the manufacturer's own catalogue and checked against the rating conditions printed there. Judging it against a labelled split on ticks alone compares two figures measured under different rules.
How many of these machines actually stand in Singapore is a question published sources do not answer, and the honest position is to say so. What the instructions describe is a machine placed outdoors on a terrace, a garden or a roof, on a base engineered for its load, ducted into the space it serves. Those are commercial and industrial conditions. A flat offers neither that surface nor that duct route.
For anyone already running one, the servicing question follows the same fork. A split labelled packaged gets serviced as a split: indoor coil and blower at the unit, condenser coil and fans out at the outdoor position, and a pipe run between them that can be checked. The one-box machine puts all of that at one address. Filters, both coils, both fan sets and the drain tray are reachable from a single standing position, behind panels the manual insists must be back on and screwed down before it runs again.
Treat the word as a pointer to a channel and check the machine separately. A tender, a catalogue or a service quote using it has told you which market the document was written for, and nothing more reliable than that. What the equipment is, and what work it will take, comes from the contents page, the model plate and the second manual, where a second manual exists.
