What salt air actually damages on a coastal aircon unit

Salt corrosion almost never presents as corrosion. It arrives as a gas leak, a tripping breaker, or a new rattle, and gets repaired as one. The unit fails again because the cause was the air, not the part.

Why coastal faults get repaired twice

Salt does not damage one component. It settles on everything the outdoor unit exposes to the air, then works on each surface at a different rate. A technician called out for a gas leak finds a gas leak, repairs it correctly, and leaves. The corrosion that caused it is still spreading along the same pipe.

That is the pattern worth recognising. On a coastal unit, a fault is usually a symptom of the environment rather than a component reaching the end of its life. The repair is right and the diagnosis is incomplete.

Distance matters more than most owners expect. Sea air carries salt well inland, and blocks that face the prevailing breeze collect more than sheltered ones on the same street. Two identical units a few hundred metres apart can age very differently.

The joint and the terminal are the two that mislead

A corroded pipe fitting thins from the outside in. The wall loses thickness until refrigerant seeps through it, which reads as an ordinary slow leak. Topping up restores cooling for a few weeks and leaves the thinning metal in place.

A corroded electrical terminal is the one that catches people out completely. Under light load a pitted contact still passes enough current to run normally. Under sustained load the resistance at that point builds heat, and the connection drops out. One coastal job came in described as fading cooling and turned out to be the terminal feeding the outdoor unit, not the refrigerant at all.

Both faults behave like something they are not. If a coastal unit has had more than one top-up, or trips only when it has been running hard, the connection points are worth opening before anything is replaced.

What cleaning recovers, and what it does not

Salt on the surface washes off. Salt that has corroded aluminium fin against copper tube does not, because the fin has already lost thickness. Once it starts to flake and separate from the tube, the heat-transfer area is gone and no wash brings it back.

That distinction decides whether a coastal condenser is worth cleaning or worth replacing. A coil with a salt crust and intact fins recovers well. A coil whose fins crumble when touched is past the point where servicing changes the outcome, and paying for repeat washes on it is money spent on a surface that is no longer there.

Ask for the fin condition specifically, not just whether the coil was cleaned. The two are different answers.

What changes on a coastal servicing plan

The interval matters less than what gets inspected. A standard visit checks the filter, the coil face and the drain. On a coastal unit the connection points carry the risk, and none of them appear on a routine checklist.

Worth asking for on every visit: the outdoor pipe joints checked for oil trace, the isolator opened and the terminals inspected, the fan blade checked for uneven deposit, and the fin condition reported rather than just the coil cleaned. None of that adds much time and all of it catches the faults above while they are still cheap.

Shortening the interval helps only once wear is actually trending. Doing more of a service that never looks at the connections does not.
