Sunlight breaks down the plastic in an aircon cover, not just the surface layer. The process is called photo-oxidation, and one visible result is a yellow or amber tint spreading across plastic that used to be white or light grey. It happens fastest on outdoor unit covers and grilles, since they sit in direct sun for most of the day, every day, for years on end. Indoor casing can show the same effect near an unshaded, sun-facing window; the mechanism is identical in both spots and only the exposure time differs.
The change takes years, not weeks, which is part of why it catches people off guard. A cover that starts out white or light grey usually shows a visible tinge only after several years of steady sun; it deepens slowly from there rather than shifting overnight. Because the shift is so gradual, most homeowners describe it as the cover simply looking older. The unit two floors down, on a shadier ledge, can still look close to new after the same number of years.
This kind of yellowing will not wipe off, no matter what is used on it; the discolouration sits inside the plastic itself, not on top of it as a film. A cloth, a detergent, or even a mild abrasive pad changes nothing, because there is nothing sitting on the surface to lift away. Getting nowhere with a stronger cleaner is often the first real sign of what is actually happening. This is a film sitting on top of the plastic, not a change to the plastic underneath, and it builds fastest in a unit near a kitchen or in a flat with an indoor smoker. Haze season adds another source, since fine particulate stays suspended in the air for days at a stretch. The casing does not need years of exposure the way sun damage does; a single bad haze season, or a few years of steady kitchen smoke, is often enough to leave a visible film.
The film builds up in layers on the surfaces that handle the most airflow. That means the front panel, the intake grille, and the seams where air moves in and out. Nicotine and cooking oil residue tends to feel faintly tacky even after it looks dry, which is a fair sign of an oil-based film rather than plain dust. Dust and haze buildup on its own usually feels dry to the touch and comes off as a grey smear rather than a sticky one.
This kind of discolouration comes off, because it never became part of the plastic in the first place. A wipe-down with mild detergent and warm water lifts most of it in one go. An untouched patch under a bracket or behind piping stays as a built-in reference for the original colour.
Touch and smell are the second clue, and they only apply to residue. A film that feels slightly tacky, carries a faint smell of smoke or cooking oil, or leaves a light grey mark on a white cloth after wiping, is residue. What a yellowed cover does and doesn't tell you about the unit inside
A yellowed cover says nothing about how well the aircon behind it is running; the cover and casing are structural and cosmetic parts. They sit outside the refrigerant circuit, the electronics, and the coil, and none of those systems change colour or behaviour based on what the plastic housing looks like. A unit that looks aged on the outside can be cooling exactly as it should. A unit that looks brand new can already have a coil overdue for a clean.
This becomes a real trap when a yellowed cover gets used as evidence for something else entirely. If someone points at a yellowed cover as a reason the whole unit needs replacing, or as proof it has not been serviced properly, push back and ask what was actually tested. Cooling performance, gas pressure, and coil condition are each checked independently of what colour the casing has turned.
There is one honest overlap worth naming. Yellowing and a real performance problem can show up on the same unit at the same time, purely by coincidence of age. An older unit is more likely to have both aged plastic and a coil that is overdue for attention, simply because both wear with time. But the yellowing itself did not cause the drop in cooling, and cleaning or replacing the coil will not change the colour of the cover.
A technician noting that a cover looks sun-aged during a routine visit is doing something normal. Using that same observation to justify extra work is a different situation entirely. A neutral mention, made in passing while checking the parts that actually matter, is fine. A cover's condition becoming the centrepiece of a quote is the part worth questioning.
When it's worth replacing a cover purely for how it looks
Replacing a yellowed cover is a purely cosmetic decision; it is worth making only when the look actually bothers the person living with it. There is no performance case for it, and no urgency attached to it either. A yellowed cover in a spot nobody looks at closely is easy to leave alone indefinitely, and an outdoor unit tucked on a rarely seen service ledge is a good example. The aircon's cooling does not change because the plastic around it looks a shade darker than it used to.
The calculation shifts for a cover in a visible spot. An indoor unit on a living room wall is one example, and an outdoor unit facing a common corridor is another. A cover swap is a small, contained job, nowhere near the size of replacing the whole indoor or outdoor unit. Only the housing piece changes, and the working parts inside stay completely untouched.
Long-term sun exposure that yellows a plastic cover is the same process that gradually makes the plastic more brittle. A cover can move past yellow into visibly chalky over enough years. It can also start to crack or chip when bumped, rather than simply looking discoloured. At that point, the cover has moved past a colour problem into a physical one, and replacing it is then less about appearance.
Matching the replacement to the right part matters here. A cover or casing panel is a distinct, smaller part from the indoor or outdoor unit it sits on, so swapping it does not mean swapping the whole unit. Checking the exact part and whether a compatible replacement exists for that model is worth doing before assuming a full unit change is the only option.
