Noise & Vibration Problems
Clicking, hissing, gurgling, rattling, or buzzing from your aircon. Learn what each sound likely means and when it needs attention.
What That Aircon Noise Is Telling You
Aircon systems are not silent, but a sudden change in sound usually signals something specific. A new clicking noise, a gurgling from the indoor unit, a rattle from the outdoor unit — each points to a different component and a different level of urgency.
Some sounds are normal and harmless. A brief gurgling when the unit starts or stops is refrigerant settling in the pipes. A soft hiss during operation is refrigerant flowing through the expansion valve. These are part of normal operation and do not need attention.
Sounds that do need attention include persistent clicking from the outdoor unit (relay or contactor issue), loud rattling or vibration (loose mounting, worn fan bearing, or debris in the fan), and a high-pitched squeal (belt or bearing failure). If you hear a loud electrical buzzing paired with a burning smell, turn the unit off immediately.
