Why does my aircon outdoor unit rattle only when windy?

The debris sits quietly until the fan pulls it against the guard. From inside the flat it sounds mechanical and serious, which is why it gets reported as a failing fan.
How to tell
This path needs the fan turning to make noise. Unlike loose mounting hardware, it stops dead the moment the unit switches off. Unlike a closing blade clearance, the sound is a loose scrape rather than a steady metallic buzz.

Never leave a corroded mounting bolt on an outdoor unit. It is a load-bearing fixing rather than a rattle, and the noise is telling you one corner has already let go.
