What we were told
The living room unit had stopped cooling completely. The outdoor side ran for a few seconds each time, then cut out with a click. Cooling had been fading through the past two hot seasons, and the electricity bill had crept up over the same period. The owner asked whether repair was still worth it.
What we checked
We started at the outdoor unit and worked back. A failing compressor and a failed starting part make the same short run and click, so the cheap causes go first. After that, the assessment moved to the whole system. On a unit this old, the compressor is only half the decision. What we found
The compressor had seized inside its sealed casing, which no on-site repair can undo. What settled the decision was everything around it. A swap would have dropped a new compressor into a system whose other parts were all close to the end of the same service life.
What fixed it
We put both paths in writing. A compressor swap carried the part, the labour, and a gas recharge, and it left every other part on a fourteen-year clock. A new system cost more up front, but it reset the warranty across the whole set and cut running power on the same load. The gap between the two figures was narrow at this age. Replacement was the better value here. On a seven-year unit we would have said the opposite.
