A compressor fails on a fourteen-year-old system. This is the point where repair quietly stops being the question.

What else produces this
A short run and a click has two causes that look identical from outside: a starting component that can no longer turn the motor, or a compressor that can no longer turn at all. One is a cheap part and the other ends the machine, so the cheap one is cleared first. On an ageing system a third question follows either answer, which is what condition everything else is in.
A starting component testing within range removes the cheap explanation before any expensive one is discussed.
A manual start that draws heavy current and trips protection within seconds is seizure, not a starting fault.
Thinned fins and corrosion across a third of the outdoor coil face say the heat-shedding surface has already gone.
A worn indoor blower and a control board still on original parts put the rest of the system on the same clock.
Why it happens
A seized compressor is sealed inside its own casing, so nothing on site reverses it. That part of the answer is quick. The slower part is that a compressor rarely fails alone on an old system: the coil, the blower and the board have run the same hours in the same heat, and they age together. Replacing one part of a set that aged together buys the life of the newest component, not the life of the machine.
What resolution involves
Two figures, both written down. A swap covers the part, the labour and a recharge, and leaves every other component on its original clock. A replacement costs more at the counter, resets warranty across the whole set, and draws less for the same cooling. Past twelve years those two numbers converge, which is what makes the swap a poor buy at that age and a clear one at seven.
How to tell it worked
Whichever way it goes, the quote should carry both numbers. A swap priced without a replacement figure beside it, and without a word about the coil, the blower or the board, has priced a part rather than assessed a machine.
