What else produces this

A silent outdoor unit has a short list of causes, and they run in a fixed order of cost. Supply first, then the start signal, then the outdoor board, then whatever is left. Each link is cheaper to clear than the one after it. Skipping straight to the expensive end is exactly how a repairable fault turns into a replacement quote.

  1. Supply reaching the outdoor terminals correctly takes power out of the question immediately.

  2. No start signal arriving from the indoor side accounts for the silence without involving the compressor.

  3. Bridging the signal at the outdoor unit brings the compressor up, running smoothly and pulling the pipe cold.

  4. A burnt relay contact with scorching around it on the indoor board names the failure precisely.

Why it happens

A relay on the indoor board carries the start command outward, and when its contact burns the command stops there. The indoor fan runs from a different circuit, so the unit still blows air and still looks alive. From the room the symptom reads as total failure. From the terminals it reads as one contact, with a sound compressor waiting behind it for an instruction that never arrives.

What resolution involves

The indoor board, and nothing else. The evidence supports that and no more: a compressor that starts and holds output, sound coils, a pipe run holding gas. Being straight about the other half matters too. The system is late in its life. A replacement conversation is a fair one to have on its own terms, at a time the owner chooses, rather than as the only option offered.

How to tell it worked

Ask which test condemned the part. A quote naming an age, or naming a symptom, has not tested anything at all. A quote naming a measurement can be checked, argued with, and trusted.

How do I know if my compressor is really dead?
By what was measured, not by what was said. A compressor that starts when the start signal is bridged at the outdoor terminals is a working compressor.
