What we were told
The bedroom unit ran and blew air, but nothing outside ever started. The power bill had been climbing for two seasons and the room felt damp at night. Someone had already been out, spent a short while at the flat, and left a written recommendation to replace the whole set. No test results came with it.
What we checked
A dead outdoor unit has a short list of causes and the compressor is only one of them. We worked from the power in to the compressor out. Supply at the isolator, then the signal wire from the indoor side, then the outdoor board, then the compressor itself. Skipping to the compressor is how an expensive answer gets reached without evidence.
Supply reached the outdoor terminals correctly, so power was not the issue.
No start signal arrived from the indoor side, which explained the silence outside.
With the signal bridged at the outdoor unit, the compressor started, ran smoothly, and pulled the pipe cold.
The indoor board showed a burnt relay contact and scorching around it.
What we found
A relay on the indoor board had burnt out and stopped passing the start command to the outdoor unit. The indoor fan still ran, which is why the unit looked alive and the fault looked worse than it was. The compressor itself was sound. It started on command, held its output, and drew normal power once running. The rest of the system tested well for its age, with clean coils, a working fan, and no leak on the pipe run.
What fixed it
We recommended replacing the indoor board and nothing else. The cost sat far below a new system, and the evidence supported it. A working compressor, sound coils, and a pipe run holding gas. We did say the system is late in life and a replacement conversation is coming. That is a plan for a chosen moment, not a decision forced by one burnt part. The rising bill traced back to the same fault, since the unit had been moving air without cooling for weeks.
Outcome
Cooling came back to full output on a board swap. The outdoor unit has started on command since, and the system stayed.
What this case teaches us
Age alone is not a diagnosis
- An old system can still hold a small fault. Age raises the odds of failure, it does not confirm which part failed.
- Before agreeing to replacement, ask what test proved the compressor is gone. A start attempt at the unit gives that answer quickly.
- A part-level repair on an older system is worth doing when the rest of it still tests well. It buys time to plan the replacement rather than fund it in a panic.
