One leak locates a fault. Several at separate points locate a condition. Where corrosion has worked along a length of pipe, the wall thins everywhere the conditions are the same, and leaks appear wherever it thins fastest first. Counting how many distinct points have failed is what turns a series of repairs into a single decision about the run, and that count is usually available without any further testing.
