Built-in Air Purifier During Haze: What It Actually Does
A unit sold with Nanoe X or Streamer already sounds like it doubles as an air purifier once the haze sets in. Filtering media and ionising treatment are not the same mechanism. What matters is which one your unit has, and what it is actually rated to catch.

Does a built-in air purifier already cover the haze?
The standard haze advice is simple. Run the aircon for cooling, keep the room sealed, and treat the fine particles with a separate air purifier. A basic split unit filter is a coarse mesh built to catch hair and dust, not the fine particulate that makes haze a health concern.
That advice assumes a plain unit. Plenty of homes now run something else. Panasonic's Nanoe X, Daikin's Streamer, Mitsubishi Electric's Starmex PM2.5, Samsung's WindFree PM2.5, LG's Plasmaster Ionizer+, and Sharp's Plasmacluster all carry purification language. If you already paid for one, the coarse-mesh answer stops being useful.
The name on the spec sheet does not tell you the mechanism. Two features marketed as air purification can work in completely different ways, and only one of those ways actually removes particulate from the air. This one goes into the named technologies on spec sheets and Carousell listings, because a generic answer does not resolve a specific brand claim.
Passive filtration and active treatment are not the same mechanism
Passive filtration is a physical barrier. Air gets pushed through a filter media, and particles above a certain size are trapped inside it. A basic aircon filter is coarse passive filtration, built to catch hair, lint, and larger dust. A HEPA filter in a dedicated purifier is fine passive filtration, dense enough to trap particles down to the size that makes up haze.
Active treatment works differently. Instead of physically holding a particle in a media, the unit releases ions, radicals, or a plasma discharge into the room air. That treatment can neutralise odour molecules, suppress airborne bacteria, or cause fine particles to clump together. It does not necessarily strip particulate mass out of the air the way a filter does.
Haze is a mass-loading problem. The air genuinely holds more fine particulate than usual, and clearing it means physically removing that mass, not just treating whatever happens to pass by. A filter rated for that particle size does the job. An ioniser or plasma generator alone is solving a different problem: odour, bacteria, and allergens in the air, not the volume of haze particulate moving through the room.
Why the marketing blurs the two
Manufacturers group both mechanisms under the same purification language, because both improve some part of indoor air quality. That is accurate as far as it goes, but it does not tell you which problem the feature actually solves. An ioniser that suppresses odour and a filter rated for fine particulate both count as air purification on a spec sheet. Only one of them does anything about the haze outside your window.
Six named technologies, one straight verdict each
These six come up most often when Singapore homeowners ask this question. Each gets the same straight read: what it mechanically is, and what that means once the haze rolls in.

If you are still shopping, not just owning
If you have not bought yet, a listing that highlights one of these features is one input, not the deciding one. A unit with Nanoe X or Plasmacluster still needs a standalone purifier during a bad haze spell if it has no PM2.5-rated filter. That is true whether or not the unit has any of these features at all.
One exception is worth flagging. A model that explicitly lists a PM2.5-rated filter, like Starmex, is doing real filtration work rather than air treatment. The same is true for a confirmed separate PM2.5 filter component on a WindFree unit. Ask your installer to confirm that by model number, not by brand name alone.
Why WindFree deserves a closer look
WindFree is the name most likely to get misread. It describes an airflow feature. Thousands of micro air holes spread the outlet air into a fine, gentle diffusion instead of a direct cold jet, which is why WindFree units feel comfortable even in fan-only or minimal cooling mode. None of that touches particulate in the air.
Where a Samsung unit also carries a separate PM2.5 filter component, that filter is the part doing the filtration work. Check the model's spec sheet for a named PM2.5 filter or sensor rather than assuming the WindFree branding covers it. If the model lists none, WindFree alone is a comfort feature during haze, not a purification one.
Why Daikin's answer depends on which part you mean
Streamer and the electrostatic filter get sold together as one feature. They are two different parts with two different jobs. Streamer treats odour and allergen molecules already caught on a filter surface. It does not treat the haze dust moving through the air.
The electrostatic filter, on the models that carry one, captures a wider band of fine dust than a standard mesh. It is the closer of the two to a real filtration answer, though it has not been tested against the same standard as a dedicated purifier's filter. Confirm which of the two, or both, your unit has before assuming the Streamer name covers haze particulate.
Starmex is the closest fit, with one caveat
Mitsubishi Electric's Starmex PM2.5 filter is the only one of the six built specifically as a physical filter rated for the particle range that makes up haze. That is a genuine filtration answer, not a treatment layered on top of one.
The caveat is scale. An aircon filter only treats the slice of air passing through the indoor unit, while a dedicated purifier has its own fan cycling the whole room's air through its filter. In a light or moderate haze, a Starmex-filtered unit is doing real work. In a heavy, sustained spell, pairing it with a room-scale purifier still covers more ground.
What none of these technologies change: the coil and drain
Every mechanism in that table sits inside the same physical unit. None of them change what happens at the coil. Haze-season dust and fine particulate settle on the coil fins and inside the drain path at the same rate on every unit. That holds whether it runs Nanoe X, Streamer, Plasmacluster, or nothing at all.
An ioniser releasing charged particles into the room does not clean the coil that the unit's own fan keeps drawing air across. A PM2.5 filter catches particulate before it reaches the coil, which helps, but the coil still needs the same haze-season attention. A haze spell loads a filter faster than an ordinary month, whatever grade it is rated to.
The same is true for airflow. WindFree's micro-hole diffusion and any ioniser's output rely on the unit's fan and vents staying clear. A coil or filter loaded with haze dust weakens airflow regardless of what treatment or diffusion feature sits downstream, which is the opposite of what any of these features are meant to deliver.
This is the part the spec sheet leaves out. Paying for Nanoe X or Plasmacluster changes what the unit does to the air in the room, not what happens inside the unit itself. A haze spell still loads the filter faster, puts more fine dust on the coil, and gives the drain path more to silt up.
Left long enough, a coil carrying months of haze dust needs more than a simple filter clean. It can end up needing a chemical wash, whatever purification feature sits on the front panel.
What to check, regardless of which technology your unit has
The technology inside your unit decides how the room air gets treated. It does not decide whether the unit itself needs a look after a haze spell. Both questions matter, but only one is about the unit's condition.
Clean or replace the filter first, whatever mechanism sits behind it. A PM2.5-rated or electrostatic filter loads up faster in a haze than a basic mesh, simply because it is built to catch more. Leave it too long and airflow drops before anything else gives it away.
Watch for the signs a plain unit would show too: airflow weaker than before the haze, a musty or dusty smell on startup, or cooling that lags behind where it used to sit. None of the named technologies prevent those signs. They are unrelated to whether a unit ionises, filters, or diffuses the air.
Filter-cleaning frequency during a haze spell does not change with the feature the unit carries. A Nanoe X or Plasmacluster unit still needs its physical filter cleaned more often while the haze lasts, because more particulate in the air means faster loading.
If the haze has run for a while, there may be doubt about whether the coil behind a Nanoe X, Streamer, Starmex, WindFree, Plasmaster Ionizer+ or Plasmacluster feature needs attention. That is worth confirming rather than assuming the marketed feature covers it.
