Why is my Carrier aircon leaking water from the ceiling?
If your Carrier sits in the ceiling, it does not drain by gravity alone. It pumps the water uphill first. That changes where a leak can start, and it means the sound the unit makes is your fastest clue.

A ceiling unit has to lift its water
Cooling makes water. The coil runs colder than the room, moisture condenses on its surface, and the drops fall into a shallow tray. That water then has to leave the unit. A wall unit lets gravity do it, down a sloped pipe running out through the wall.
A ceiling unit has no such luck. The tray sits below the drain line, so a small pump lifts the water to a height where a sloped pipe can take over. Cassettes and ducted units both work this way.
The pump is a small assembly: a reservoir it fills into, a float that senses the level rising, a motor, and a hose that carries the water out. A leak means one of those four stopped doing its part, and the room will usually still be cooling normally while it happens.
So the question on a ceiling unit is whether the pump is running, and if it is, why the water still is not reaching the drain.
Listen to the unit before you look at the ceiling
A working pump is audible. It cycles on for a few seconds, clears the tray, and stops. Owners stop noticing it. When something changes, that sound is the quickest thing to check.
Total silence is the useful signal. A pump that has burnt out usually still tries to run. It strains, or leaves a faint burnt smell behind. A pump making no sound is more often a pump receiving no power.
A pump that still cycles normally while water drips says the opposite. The motor is fine. Water is escaping between the tray and the drain line, so the connections are where to start.
Where the water lands supports the reading. A drip from one fixed spot points at a connection. Water spreading out of the tray points at nothing lifting it away.

The week before the leak usually explains it
Ask what happened to the unit recently. A ceiling Carrier that ran dry for years and started leaking days after a chemical wash is not a unit that aged out. It is a unit that was opened.
A wash means the pump area comes apart. The discharge hose comes off, connections are undone, and everything goes back at the end of a long job. Two slips at that stage produce this exact picture.
The first is a hose pushed back onto its fitting without seating fully. The pump still clears most of the water. Enough escapes at the joint to drip steadily from one spot near the pump housing, which makes the pump look like the fault.
The second is a power lead left off its terminal. The pump then cannot sense water rising, let alone move it. The tray fills and overflows, and from the room that looks exactly like a choked drain.
What to ask for, in that order
Say when the unit was washed and when the drip began. Then name the two checks you want made first: the pump's power terminal, and whether its discharge hose is fully seated. Neither one needs a part ordered.
Put it plainly and without accusation. A hose or a lead left short at the end of a long job is an ordinary mistake. Most technicians will look at their own work on request.
A quote for a new pump is the thing to slow down on
Pump replacement is the expensive answer, and a silent pump invites it. From inside the room, a disconnected pump and a dead pump are indistinguishable. Both make no sound and both let the tray overflow.
The test that separates them is quick. Power goes to the pump directly. If it engages and clears water at its normal rate, the pump was never the fault. The problem sits in the wiring or the connection.
The same logic covers the hose. A pump that moves water properly on test has proved itself. Replacing it will not stop a leak coming from a joint downstream.
Get that check named before parts are ordered. Reconnecting a lead and replacing a pump are not the same job, or the same bill.
Cut the power, then write down what the pump was doing
Kill the supply at the isolator if water has reached a light fitting, wiring, or the void above the ceiling. Ceiling units drain into the structure rather than down a wall, so the damage builds where nobody can see it.
Short of that, there is no urgency. The drip is condensate off the coil, not refrigerant, and the unit takes no harm from it. Switched off, the coil stops making any more.
Then note three things while they are fresh. Whether the pump cycles, strains or stays silent. The date the drip started. And a photograph of the stain, taken before anyone wipes it. Those three carry most of the diagnosis to whoever arrives.
