Aircon drain flush vs vacuum: where the blockage ends up
A blocked condensate line can be opened from either end, and the two directions do not do the same thing. One carries the obstruction deeper into pipe nobody can see. The other draws it out where somebody can look at it.

Two ends to a drain, and either one can be worked
A condensate line is open at both ends, and that is what makes two methods possible. The tray end is reachable once the indoor casing comes off. The discharge end sits outside, at whatever point the pipe finally releases the water. Clearing work attaches to one of those two openings and not to any point in between.
Fluid introduced at the tray end travels the way condensate already travels. It follows the fall of the pipe toward the outlet, and whatever sits in the bore is carried ahead of it. The obstruction moves away from the person doing the work, into pipe that person cannot see.
Suction applied at the discharge end runs the same route backwards. Air and water are drawn toward the machine, against the direction the line was laid to flow. Anything that comes free arrives at the open end, outside, in front of whoever is holding the hose.
Neither label guarantees a direction on its own. Fluid can be introduced at either opening and suction can be applied at either opening, so the words flush and vacuum describe a tool rather than a route. Tools and access push each one toward a habitual end, which is why the shorthand survives and why it is worth asking rather than assuming.
The pipe between those two openings is not a clean tube either. It steps down in width at fittings, turns at least once behind the casing, and vanishes into trunking a short way from the unit. Those features matter here for a single reason. Each of them is a place where travelling material can stop again.
All of it lands on a job sheet under the same vocabulary. Cleared. Flushed. Sorted. None of those words carries an end or a direction, and direction is the part that changes what happened to the blockage.
Why direction decides removal or relocation
A push has no fixed destination. Material travels until the flow behind it weakens or the bore opens out, and neither of those has to happen at the outlet. Where it settles is decided by the shape of the pipe, not by anybody on the job.
A pull has exactly one destination. Material either reaches the machine at the open end, or it does not move at all. No third position is available to it, because the only opening on that route is the one being drawn through.
That asymmetry is the whole argument. Both directions can fail to clear a line. Only one of them can fail while looking like a success.
Relocation and removal look the same from inside the room. Flow returns at the outlet. The dripping stops. The tray empties and stays empty. Every signal a homeowner has to judge the visit by reads identically whichever direction was used. The difference has to be supplied by the person who did the work, because the room will never supply it.
The route also crosses a boundary somewhere along its length. Plenty of installations discharge into a floor trap, a bathroom waste, or a point shared with neighbouring homes rather than into pipe belonging to one flat. HDB aircon drainage rules set what that arrangement has to satisfy. Material driven past the boundary has left the system, and it has left the reach of anybody who might need to retrieve it.
Where a pushed blockage can settle
Three destinations are available, and just one was intended. The material reaches the outlet and leaves the building. It stops at the next fitting or bend, further into the concealed run than where it started. Or it carries on into a shared discharge and turns into a slow drain somewhere else.
The middle outcome is the awkward one. A plug that formed near the tray throat began within reach of both ends of the line. Moved into the concealed middle, it now answers to neither, and getting at it means opening trunking or a ceiling instead of attaching a machine to an open pipe.
Nothing about that outcome announces itself. The pipe drains, the visit closes, and the position of the material is recorded nowhere. It surfaces later as a leak that came back in a place the first visit already checked.
Which direction suits which line?
Neither direction wins in general, and anybody claiming one does has stopped looking at the pipe in front of them. What settles it is what is known about the route and what is thought to be sitting inside it. Both of those vary from flat to flat.
Suction needs an outlet worth attaching to. Wall units in Singapore flats usually have one, on a ledge or above a floor trap, and that opening is often the single visible point on an otherwise buried run. Where the pipe disappears into a common riser with nothing exposed, that end offers nothing to draw against.
Fluid suits a bore that has narrowed rather than plugged. Soft growth breaks up and disperses as it is carried, so it never needs a single destination the way a solid object does. That is a different problem obeying different rules, and it is the one fluid handles well.
What is suspected inside the pipe therefore matters more than the age of the system. A line that faded gradually is describing growth along the wall of the bore. A line that stopped abruptly is describing an object, and an object is where a push carries the most risk if the guess turns out wrong.
Access often settles the question before diagnosis gets a say. That is worth stating plainly rather than dressing up. A technician who can reach only one end of a line is not choosing between two methods. That technician is choosing between one method and none.
The two also combine, and on a stubborn line they usually do. Drawing from the outlet first establishes whether anything will come back at all, and fluid from the tray side afterwards confirms the bore runs freely along its whole length. The order carries the meaning. Starting with the pull keeps the option of retrieving the material, and starting with the push spends it.

When the outlet end is not really available
Access is set by the installation, not by preference. A discharge point on a low ledge outside a bedroom window is workable. One terminating inside a common riser, or spilling down a facade well above ground, is not, and preferring one direction changes none of that.
Some systems have no gravity outlet at all. Cassette and ducted units raise their condensate mechanically, so the reachable end of that route is a sealed chamber and not an open pipe. Direction carries a different meaning on those, and a condensate lift pump is covered separately.
What tells you the line was emptied, not rearranged?
The evidence is physical, and it admits no middle position. Something came out of the pipe, or nothing did. A technician who drew material out can describe it without being prompted. A technician who drove it onward has nothing to describe, because nothing came back to look at.
None of that is an accusation, and it should not be read as one. Running fluid through a bore that had only narrowed genuinely produces nothing to hold up, and the pipe genuinely drains afterwards. The point is narrower than blame. Where nothing was recovered, the work alone cannot say which of those two things took place.
So the leak stopping settles nothing. It stopped in both versions. What settles it is whether anything was retrieved, and whether anybody looked at the material before it went in the bin.
An owner cannot inspect the bore and has no need to. A line cleared more than once with nothing ever produced from it is a line whose contents nobody has seen. That gap is worth naming out loud before agreeing to a repeat of the same visit.
Recurrence carries the rest of the story, and the beat of it is the part to read. A line that closes again at even spacing is usually a drain gradient question rather than a clearing question, and it has its own page. The signs of a drain about to clog sit elsewhere too. What a drain flush treats, and what it leaves untouched, belongs to that guide rather than to this one.
The second blockage sits further along than the first
A moved blockage has travelled away from the indoor unit, but the leak has not travelled with it. Water still backs up to the tray and still spills in the same spot, because the tray is the only opening on the way back. The symptom repeats with no hint that the obstruction changed position.
The shift surfaces on the following visit instead. Somebody checks the stretch nearest the unit, finds it open, and concludes the pipe is sound. The pipe is sound there. The obstruction sits past whatever that check reached, close to where the earlier visit left it.
This is how a single blockage bills as three visits. Each visit works the reachable stretch, each one restores flow, and none of them ever meets the material. The pattern breaks only when somebody works the far end and produces what has been travelling ahead of the fluid.
Getting an answer that names the end and the result
The sentence that closes most of these visits is that the drain was cleared. It reports that work took place. It reports nothing about which way the material travelled, or whether it travelled anywhere at all.
The fix is not a longer conversation. It is one extra clause: cleared from which end, and what came out of it. Anybody who did the work is holding both answers already, and both fit inside a single sentence.
The value sits in what a full answer rules out. Material drawn out at the outlet means the bore is empty and the matter is closed. Fluid run through from the tray side with nothing seen means the bore is open and its contents are still unrecorded. Those are two different states, and they lead to two different next visits.
Asking is not a challenge to the work. Direction is ordinary information that the trade records loosely, because both approaches bill under one word and both restore flow. The question simply converts an invoice line into something the next technician can use.
Some answers will be unsatisfying and still be correct. A technician who reports that only one end could be reached, and that nothing came back from it, has given a complete account of a limited job. That is a different position from a technician who cannot say which end was worked at all. The first tells an owner where the uncertainty sits. The second leaves the uncertainty impossible to place.
Five things make an answer complete, and none of them ask the owner to understand drainage.
