Grey-import aircon: same model, different obligations
A parallel import and an authorised unit can carry the same model number and the same rating plate. What separates them arrives later: who honours the warranty, and who stocks the parts. Neither question is answered on the showroom floor.

What a parallel import is, and why it is lawful here
A parallel import is a genuine unit that reached Singapore through a channel the manufacturer never appointed. Somebody buys stock meant for another market, brings it in, and sells it here. The unit left the same production line as the one standing in the authorised dealer's window.
Singapore law allows this. Trade mark rights are treated as spent once the owner of the mark has put those goods on the market, here or anywhere else. That is why reselling genuine branded goods brought in outside the official chain is not an infringement. The position sits in the Trade Marks Act and has been argued and upheld in the Singapore courts. Nobody is exploiting a loophole.
None of this makes a parallel import a fake. A counterfeit carries a mark it has no right to carry, and that alone puts it outside the law. A parallel import carries the mark legitimately, because the manufacturer applied it before the unit ever moved. Treating the two as the same problem sends a buyer looking for signs of forgery, which is the wrong hunt entirely.
The saving comes from what the official chain pays for and the unofficial one does not. An appointed distributor funds claim handling, a local parts inventory, technician training and the staff who sit behind all three. Those costs are inside the price of an authorised unit whether the owner ever draws on them or not. Strip them out and identical hardware costs less. The saving is real, and so is the thing that was removed to create it.
What diverges once the model number matches
Four things separate the two units, and none of them is inside the casing. Each sits somewhere else: in a contract, in a supply chain, in a factory specification, and on a label.
Who honours the warranty
A manufacturer warranty is a contract, and every contract names who it binds. The wording normally ties cover to the market the unit was sold into and to the party that sold it. Read that clause before anything else, because it decides whether a claim goes to an office in Singapore or back to the country the unit came from.
Ask who administers the claim rather than whether cover exists. Nearly every unit is sold with some form of cover. What matters is which office receives the paperwork, who supplies the failed part, and who pays the labour to fit it. Cover administered by the importing company is a different instrument from cover administered by the brand's own local operation, even when the printed period reads identically.
Cover held by an importer is worth what that importer is worth, and saying so is not an accusation. It is structural. The promise lasts only as long as the company holding it, and a firm that stops trading takes its obligations out with it. An appointed distributor can close too. Behind it there is usually a brand relationship that outlives the company.
One thing does not change between the two paths. Cover can still be lost through what happens after installation, and the list of things that void warranty applies the same way to both. Those causes have their own guide and are left there.
Where the spare parts come from
Parts are where the divergence bites hardest, and nothing about it shows until something fails. A local distributor stocks inventory for the models it sells here. A model that never travelled through that chain has no reason to be sitting on the shelf.
The unit does not have to be obscure for this to happen. Manufacturers build regional variants of the same model, so two units can look identical from a metre away and take a different control board, a different sensor harness or a different fan assembly. The casing matches. The part number underneath it does not.
In practice that means a wait, and occasionally a dead end. A technician who cannot source the component cannot finish the job, and the owner is left with a working chassis and one failed part inside it. That is ordinary for imported goods of any kind. It simply hurts more here, in a climate where the unit is rarely idle.
A second effect follows from the first. Some service networks take on only the units their own chain supplied, because that is what their technicians are trained and stocked for. Declining is a commercial decision rather than a verdict on the unit, and the owner still has to find somebody else.
Regional variants, refrigerant and firmware
Manufacturers build the same model differently for different markets, because the markets are different. Mains voltage and frequency vary from country to country, so a unit specified for one grid does not necessarily behave the same on another. Refrigerant choice, corrosion protection on the outdoor coil and the conditions the unit was rated against all vary along the same lines.
Local ambient conditions are a genuine specification input, not marketing decoration. A unit built for a temperate market was rated against a cooler design ambient and a lighter humidity load than a flat here will put on it. It still cools. It does so with less headroom on the hottest afternoons, and its outdoor coil meets a salt and moisture load the specification never assumed.
Firmware and app pairing split along the same regional line. Control apps are often locked to a region, so a unit built for elsewhere may refuse to pair with the app sold here. The handset on the wall works normally. The connected features are the part that quietly does not, and nobody discovers it until they try.
The paperwork, and what it can be checked against
Household aircon supplied in Singapore sits under registration requirements that leave a trace on the unit itself. That trace is the one thing in this whole subject a buyer can inspect without asking anybody's permission.
Single-phase split-type aircon is a regulated good under the Energy Conservation Act. Importers and manufacturers have to register themselves and each model with the National Environment Agency before supplying it here, and a registered supplier must affix the energy label to every unit it supplies. The label carries a number taken from that model's certificate of registration, so it is not a sticker about running cost alone. It is the visible end of a registration that either happened or did not. What the tick rating itself means is a separate subject.
A second requirement sits on the gas rather than the efficiency. Since October 2022, household aircon supplied here must use a refrigerant within a set global warming limit. The rule sits in Singapore's Environmental Protection and Management Act. It rules out gases still fitted to units built for other markets. A model specified where no such cap applies can carry a gas that may not lawfully be supplied here. One more label goes with this. An advisory sticker from the Singapore Civil Defence Force is required on R32 units.
The requirement now follows the unit rather than only the seller. Since July 2026, household aircon imported by an end user for their own use must also be registered with NEA, meet the performance standard and carry the energy label. Online platforms advertising a regulated good have to ensure the advertised model is registered as well. Ordering direct from overseas does not step around the rule. It moves the obligation onto the person who ordered.
Safety registration is a separate scheme with its own mark. The Consumer Product Safety Office lists room air-conditioners of the window or through-wall type among its controlled goods. Those must be registered and carry a SAFETY Mark before sale. Which marks a given unit should carry depends on its form. Ask about the unit in front of you rather than assuming one mark settles everything.
Why the gap stays quiet at first
Nothing goes wrong early, and that is the whole difficulty. A new aircon of any provenance runs well out of the carton. Cooling is a function of the hardware, and the hardware is the same hardware.
The difference lies dormant because it is a service and supply difference, not a build difference. It needs a trigger, and the trigger is a fault that calls for a claim or a part. Until one arrives, the two units are indistinguishable from inside the room they are cooling.
So the first real test lands at the worst possible moment. The owner is already inconvenienced and already hot, and only then finds out who is responsible for putting it right. That is a poor hour to learn that the claim goes overseas, or that the board is not held anywhere on this island.
The pattern deserves naming, because it distorts the advice a buyer hears. Owners who bought outside the official chain and have not yet needed a repair will report an excellent experience, sincerely and accurately, since their experience so far has only touched the half that is identical. Their account is not wrong. It is early.
Resale carries the same quiet inheritance. A unit sold on with a flat keeps whatever service path it was born with, and the person selling may genuinely not know which one that is. Once the original paperwork is gone, the model number and the label on the unit are the only evidence anybody has left.
Where the two paths separate in practice
Read the table by row rather than by column. Each row is a moment that eventually arrives for every unit, and the middle column names the thing that decides how it goes.
The right-hand column is the one to act on. Every entry in it can be closed before any money changes hands, and none of them requires technical knowledge to ask about.

Questions that settle it before you pay
The decision reduces to establishing which of the two units is actually on offer. A seller holding authorised stock answers these without effort. A seller holding parallel stock answers them honestly when asked plainly, because there is nothing unlawful to conceal.
Ask them in the shop, in this order, and listen for whether the answer names a party or describes a feeling.
- Does this unit come through the brand's appointed distributor in Singapore? This is a yes or a no. An answer longer than that is already the answer.
- Who administers the warranty, and where does a claim physically go? Name the entity rather than the period.
- If the control board fails, where is the replacement ordered from? A seller stocked for the model answers immediately.
- Which company services this unit, and will they attend one bought here? Then ring that company and ask them the same thing.
- Does the unit carry the energy label with its registration number? The label is on the unit, so this is checkable where you are standing.
- Was this model specified for the Singapore market? Ask what refrigerant it holds and what conditions it was rated against.
Telling a real answer from a deflection
A seller who deals in parallel stock and says so plainly is easier to buy from than one who blurs the question. The honest version sounds like a description of an arrangement: the unit comes from a named market, cover is administered by the importing company, parts are ordered in as needed, and here is the route if something fails.
The answer to watch for is the one that switches the subject to the brand. That the unit is genuine will be perfectly true, and it settles nothing, because authenticity was never in doubt. Provenance was.
Push back once, using the same words. If the second answer is also about the badge rather than the channel, treat the channel as unconfirmed and weigh the discount against a service path nobody has been willing to describe.
When buying outside the official chain still makes sense
There is a version of this decision where the unofficial unit wins outright, and it is not a rare one. A buyer comfortable carrying the service risk, or one who already has an independent technician they trust, is paying less for hardware they would have received either way.
The condition is that the risk is carried knowingly. Somebody who understands that a board may take a while to source, and has decided that is acceptable, has made a real decision. Somebody who assumed the local service centre would simply handle it has not made a decision at all.
The mismatch is where it goes wrong. A household with no tolerance for the unit being out of action, or a landlord with an obligation attached to it, is taking on a different kind of exposure than the saving reflects. The same purchase can be shrewd in one flat and expensive in the next.
Provenance also sits on top of everything else, not instead of it. The aircon buying checklist covering sizing, efficiency and placement still governs whether the unit suits the room at all. Getting the channel right on a unit that was the wrong size to begin with fixes nothing worth fixing.
