Plasmacluster: what Sharp's ions do, and who tested it

Sharp puts something into the room instead of holding anything back, so the feature cannot be judged the way a filter is. Almost all the published evidence was paid for by Sharp. Two public agencies have written about this class, and neither reads like the brochure.

What the discharge electrode puts into the room

Plasmacluster releases charged particles, and no part of it holds anything back. Sharp describes an electrode inside the unit with voltage applied across it. From the water and oxygen already in the passing air, that discharge produces positive hydrogen ions and negative oxygen ions.

Each ion then picks up a coat of water on the way out. Sharp's account is that the charge attracts water molecules in the air, which surround the ion and form what the company calls a stable cluster ion. The name of the technology comes from that structure.

Sharp places the important reaction at the target, not inside the unit. In the company's description, the two ion types bond onto the surface of an airborne virus or similar substance and become OH radicals there. Those radicals then pull hydrogen out of the surface protein, which Sharp states breaks the protein down.

The cycle ends in water, on Sharp's account. The radical joins the hydrogen it removed, forms a water molecule, and that goes back into the air. Read whole, the mechanism is a chemical one aimed at a surface. It depends on an ion physically arriving at that surface.

Two practical things follow from the design. Nothing has to be bought again, since the generator draws its input from air the fan is already moving. There is also no airflow cost, because nothing dense sits in the path the fan pushes against.

On Sharp's wall-mounted lines the feature reports itself with a lamp, and that lamp is all an owner can see. It confirms the generator has power. It says nothing about what reached the other end of the room.

The density figure is a house measure, not a shared one

The headline number on a Plasmacluster product is a count, and Sharp defines it. The company states the figure is the number of positive and negative ions counted per one cubic centimetre of air. Sharp uses those counts to name its product tiers.

How the count is taken is published, and it repays a read. Sharp states the reading is made with an ion counter placed in the middle of the room, 1.2 metres above the floor, with the product standing by the wall. Those conditions are the whole method as Sharp gives it.

Sharp also claims the practice is unique to it. The company states it is the only one that measures ion density and notes the matching floor space beside it. Sharp cites no outside standard for the count, and none is named on the page that explains it.

The rule for reading the number is supplied by Sharp too. The company states that the higher the ion density, the greater the effect. That sentence carries a lot of weight, and it comes from the party selling the higher figure.

What the count cannot say is where the ions end up. The reading point sits in the middle of an open room at chest height. A bedroom with a wardrobe, a door and a corridor beyond it has a different shape, and the figure holds no information about it.

The same figure travels across products that are not aircon

Plasmacluster is a technology brand before it is an aircon feature. Sharp carries the name across portable ion generators, air purifiers and business air products, and the density tiers belong to that wider range. A figure quoted on one line was measured on that line.

Treat a density number seen in a showroom as belonging to the product it was printed on. Two Sharp appliances quoting the same count are quoting the same generator family, which is not the same as delivering the same result in the same room. Ask what the wall-mounted unit in front of you publishes for itself.

Who ran the test behind each claim

Sharp publishes the testing body alongside each claim, which is more than most branded features offer. The company lists an effect, names the laboratory, and prints the chamber size and the exposure window beside it. Anyone weighing the technology should start there, because the detail is unusually complete.

The list below is Sharp's own, reorganised so the tester sits next to the claim it belongs to. Every figure in it comes from Sharp's published material, and none of it has been rounded, restated or improved. Reading down the middle column is the point of the exercise.

The odour row is the one to sit with

Odour is the claim closest to what a buyer in this climate is actually chasing. It is also the row where Sharp names itself as the tester. The virus, bacteria, mould and allergen rows all went to an outside laboratory, and the one an aircon owner cares most about did not.

None of that makes the outside labs suspect. A paid test at a named lab, with the conditions printed, is real evidence. Waving it away would be posture, not judgement. The plain fact is that almost all the evidence here was paid for by Sharp, because Sharp ordered the work and Sharp prints the results.

What a funded programme cannot supply is the study nobody wanted. A flat result has no clear route to publication when the party paying is the party selling. That is a structural feature of vendor-funded research anywhere, and it applies here the same way it applies elsewhere.

Read the time window before the percentage

Sharp prints an exposure period beside every claim, and the periods are not interchangeable. Nine to eighteen minutes and eight days describe two very different commitments from a machine. A seller quoting a suppression figure without the window beside it has dropped half of what Sharp published.

An aircon runs on the household's schedule. It starts when a room fills and stops when the room empties, which is a pattern no continuous-exposure figure was measured against. The surface-mould result in particular assumes the generator kept working for over a week without a break.

Ask for the window and the chamber size together. Both sit in Sharp's own material, so a seller who cannot produce them is not being asked for anything the maker withheld.

Ozone, and what two agencies say about this class of device

Ion generators sit inside a class of product that public agencies have written about by name. Sharp's own technology pages do not mention ozone anywhere, worth knowing before any seller tells you the question is closed. The absence is checkable in a few minutes.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has written about this class by name. Ozone, which it calls a lung irritant, is produced indirectly by ion generators. Those are the agency's words, not a summary of them. It adds that under certain use conditions, these devices can produce levels significantly above levels thought harmful to human health.

Efficacy is where the same agency draws its line. Ion generators do not remove gases or odors, the agency states. It adds that they may be relatively ineffective in removing large particles such as pollen and house dust allergens. Set that beside Sharp's tobacco-odour claim. A maker and a regulator are on record disagreeing about one kind of device.

Singapore has its own instrument, and it names this class. NEA's technical advisory on air-cleaning technologies covers electronic air cleaners. They may generate ozone and other undesirable secondary by-products, it states. Those could have potential health effects. On efficacy the advisory is blunt. For most such products, it is not supported by consistently robust scientific evidence. Buyers are asked to exercise caution, and to check that claims come with safety data.

Local consumer guidance goes quiet on the subject. NEA's haze advice on choosing an air cleaner leads on clean air delivery rate and room size, and no ion technology appears on it at all. Anyone treating a built-in ion feature as haze equipment is reading it into a category the local guidance never placed it in.

One document worth asking a seller for

There is a published threshold an ozone claim can be measured against. UL Solutions runs a validation for zero ozone emissions from air cleaners, and the qualifying level is below 0.005 parts per million. The broader safety standard beside it, UL 867, permits up to 0.05 parts per million, which is ten times higher.

Ask which of those a unit has been tested against, and ask to see the paperwork. A seller who produces it has answered the question. A seller who says the technology is natural has answered nothing, because no measurement lives in that sentence.

Nothing here asserts what any particular Sharp unit emits. That figure was not published on the technology pages this page draws from, so it is not stated here either.

What an independent trial found, and what it leaves open

One recent trial ran outside a maker's programme. It did not find what the marketing would predict. A team at Virginia Tech tested an in-duct bipolar ioniser in a 540-seat lecture hall, across three weeks. They found no significant drop in culturable airborne bacteria, whether the ioniser ran or sat idle.

The funding matters as much as the finding. The work was supported by the United States National Science Foundation, and the authors declared no competing financial interest. That is a different kind of evidence from a commissioned chamber test, and it is the kind this whole category has very little of.

That result does not settle anything about Plasmacluster. It tested another maker's device, mounted in ductwork, serving a hall that seats hundreds. A wall unit in a Singapore bedroom is a different machine in a different room, and no fair reading stretches one to the other.

What it does support is the authors' own summary. They wrote that showing an air-cleaning technology works in the laboratory does not necessarily translate to real-world settings. That is the reason a sealed-chamber figure and a lived-in flat should be held apart, and it comes from a team with nothing to sell.

Sharp has a published position on safety, and it belongs here too. The company says it found no adverse effect on the skin, eyes, genes, body and organs, mother and fetus, or two-generation reproduction. It ran those checks at ion densities many times higher than its products deliver. The test sites complied with good laboratory practice. That is Sharp's account of Sharp's own testing.

This page does not rule on health, and no line in it should be read that way. Whether a technology helps or harms any particular person is a medical question, and an aircon company is the wrong party to answer it. The agencies quoted above are stating positions on a class of product, not on a household.

Where it sits on a Sharp quotation

The feature is rarely the biggest variable on a Sharp decision here. Support for the brand in Singapore is thinner than it once was. Parts supply on an ageing unit shapes the ownership years far more than any air-treatment feature will.

Weigh what can be checked before signing. Whether the generator is fitted to that exact model, what the seller can produce on ozone, and what the servicing plan asks of you are all answerable now. Ion density and suppression percentages are answerable only by the party selling.

Decline one exchange outright. Nobody should trade maintenance for an air-treatment feature, and a seller who suggests that swap has told you how well they know the product. Ions let loose in a room lift nothing off a coil and clear nothing out of a blocked drain.

A buyer can land on either side of this and be reasonable. Sharp publishes more of its own method than most of the category does, the named laboratories are real, and the ozone question is open instead of answered against it. Someone who values the feature has not been fooled, and someone who passes on it has not missed out. The decision only goes wrong when the feature is bought in place of the maintenance.
