Samsung Aircon Blinking Light: What It Means and What to Do

Samsung indoor units report faults in two ways: a code on the display of wall-mounted AR and Wind-Free models, or a colour-blink pattern on the 360 Cassette indicator panel. Both formats point to the same fault families. Model layouts vary, so match the behaviour to your own unit.

What each Samsung indicator light does

Samsung reports a fault either as a display code or as a pattern on the indoor indicator panel. Layout, colour and behaviour vary by series, so confirm what your own model shows before treating a light as a fault.

  • Unit type
    Wall-mounted AR and Wind-Free
    Indicator
    Indoor display
    What it shows
Alphanumeric code such as E101, E121 or E154
  • Unit type
    Wall-mounted without a display
    Indicator
    Operation and timer lights
    What it shows
Power, timer and standby states; a fault shows as light behaviour only
  • Unit type
    360 Cassette
    Indicator
    Four-colour indicator
    What it shows
Eight fault patterns and two status patterns from the manual

Normal Samsung light behaviour and protection states

Several displays that look alarming are routine. CF is a filter reminder, CI means Auto clean is running, and dF marks an automatic defrost.

The 360 Cassette adds two status patterns: an ice-blue blink every two seconds when power is restored, and every ten seconds during defrost. Both are operating states, not faults.

E440 and E441 are operating-condition restrictions, not part failures. The unit limits heating or cooling when outdoor air sits outside its permitted range, then resumes when conditions return.

A short delay before the compressor starts is normal after power returns. The unit is equalising pressure, so watch the display and let it settle.

Samsung fault patterns and the codes they map to

Display models name the fault directly, while 360 Cassette units encode it in colour. The table below maps the common patterns and codes to the same fault families.

  • Pattern or code
    E101 / E102
    What it means
Indoor and outdoor units are not communicating
    First check
Power to both units and the connecting cable
  • Pattern or code
    E108
    What it means
Two indoor units share one communication address
    First check
Address setting on the shared line
  • Pattern or code
    E121
    What it means
Indoor room temperature sensor open or short
    First check
    Sensor and its connector
  • Pattern or code
    E153
    What it means
Float switch triggered a second time
    First check
Drain pan, drain pump and discharge path
  • Pattern or code
    E154 / C154
    What it means
Indoor fan speed error or fan protection
    First check
Fan motor, harness and indoor board
  • Pattern or code
    E301
    What it means
    High-pressure sensor detached
    First check
Sensor fitment on the high-pressure line
  • Pattern or code
    E306
    What it means
    Low-pressure sensor detached
    First check
Sensor fitment on the low-pressure line
  • Pattern or code
    E416
    What it means
    Discharge over-temperature protection
    First check
Outdoor airflow, coil condition and charge
  • Pattern or code
    E458
    What it means
    Outdoor fan error
    First check
    Fan motor and outdoor board
  • Pattern or code
    E554
    What it means
    Refrigerant leak detected
    First check
Leak test and flare joints before any top-up
  • Pattern or code
    Red blinking (360 Cassette)
    What it means
Indoor temperature sensor open or short
    First check
    Sensor and connector
  • Pattern or code
    Yellow-green + blue blinking (360 Cassette)
    What it means
Float switch detected a second time
    First check
    Drain path and pump
  • Pattern or code
Blue + red blinking (360 Cassette)
    What it means
    Indoor fan error
    First check
    Fan motor and harness

How to retrieve a Samsung error code

On display models, read the alphanumeric code from the indoor panel or the wireless remote. The Samsung error code list holds the full set, and two-part codes separate the fault family from the specific detail.

The 360 Cassette indicator carries no readable code. Record a short video of two complete blink cycles with all four colours visible.

On a multi-split system, film each indoor unit in turn and keep the unit in its fault state while recording. The pattern and the code are the evidence a technician works from.

Samsung multi-split systems: one unit or all of them

One indoor unit showing a code while the rest run normally points to that unit alone: its room sensor, fan, drain circuit or communication address.

When all indoor units report one identical code, the outdoor unit and the line joining the heads come first. E101 and E102 cover that link, and E108 marks an address conflict on it.

Read every indoor unit at its own display or remote before reporting the fault. How many heads are affected decides where the diagnosis starts.

Common questions

Why does a Samsung aircon show a blinking light?
It reports a fault the indoor unit has stored, shown as a display code on wall-mounted models or as a colour pattern on the 360 Cassette panel. Both formats point to the same fault families.
Is every Samsung light pattern a fault?
No. A filter reminder, the auto-clean cycle and defrost are normal states. The 360 Cassette also blinks while power is restored and during defrost, and a short compressor delay after power returns is expected.
How do I read the code from a Samsung aircon?
On display models, read the alphanumeric code from the indoor panel or the wireless remote. On the 360 Cassette, film two full blink cycles with all four colours visible, because the panel carries no readable code.
One Samsung indoor unit is blinking while the rest cool fine. What does that mean?
The fault usually sits with that unit: its room sensor, fan, drain circuit or communication address. Check every indoor unit before reporting, because the number affected decides where diagnosis starts.
What should be ready when booking a Samsung fault diagnosis?
The exact code or a clear video, the model, and which indoor units are affected. That evidence lets a technician trace the fault family before arriving.
