Why did one room stop cooling after my renovation?
Nothing has to break for a renovation to stop a room cooling. A partition changes how air moves, and the aircon keeps working exactly as designed while one room stays warm.

1. Cold air can no longer reach the room
Little or no air at the vent serving the warm room usually means the supply path was closed off. A partition, a bulkhead, or a new shelf changes where air can travel. The unit still produces cold air. It just no longer arrives where it used to.
How to tell
This path starves the room of air. Unlike a blocked return, the vent itself delivers almost nothing. Unlike a sensor problem, the unit keeps running hard rather than throttling back.
- Almost no air comes out of that room's vent or grille.
- Other rooms cool as well as they always did.
- A wall, bulkhead, or tall unit went up near the vent.
- The problem dates exactly from the renovation.
How we confirm it
We trace the supply path from the unit to that room and find where it was closed off. The route is then reopened or the outlet repositioned so air reaches the space again.
Adding a bigger unit does not fix a blocked supply path. More cold air produced in the wrong place still never reaches the room, so the capacity upgrade is wasted.

2. Warm air cannot get back to the unit
Good airflow at the vent, with the room still warm, points to the return side. Cooling depends on a loop. Air has to leave the unit, pass through the room and find its way back. A partition that seals the room turns that loop into a dead end, so the unit cools the air nearest itself.
How to tell
This path breaks the loop rather than the supply. Unlike a blocked supply, plenty of air arrives at the vent. Unlike a sensor problem, the unit is not throttling back, it simply cannot move heat out of the room.
- Airflow at the vent feels normal or even strong.
- The room is still warm despite that airflow.
- The new partition or door seals the room fairly tightly.
- The area on the other side of the partition is comfortable.
How we confirm it
We check the return path from the room back to the unit intake. A return opening, grille, or undercut is then created so the air loop closes properly.
A gas top-up is not the fix when airflow at the vent is already good. Nothing is short of refrigerant, and the charge work misses the air loop that the renovation broke.

3. The room follows a sensor somewhere else
A room that stays warm while the unit quietens down early is usually being controlled from elsewhere. A fit-out can split one open area into two spaces while the controlling sensor stays on the other side. Once that side reaches target, cooling is reduced for the whole zone.
How to tell
This path is a control fault rather than an airflow one. Unlike either blockage, the unit deliberately reduces cooling instead of running hard. The room it is listening to is comfortable, which is why it stops.
- The unit eases off while this room is still warm.
- The area the sensor sits in is comfortable or cold.
- The two spaces used to be one open area.
- It behaves as though it has already finished cooling.
How we confirm it
We check which sensor governs the affected space and how the zone was split during the fit-out. Control is then moved or re-zoned so the warm room drives its own cooling.
Do not let anyone re-gas or replace the unit for this. The equipment is working to the reading it is given, so the fault is in where that reading comes from.
