Daikin vs Midea aircon: same running cost, different age
At matched capacity and matched ticks, the running cost of these two is the same in practice. Eighteen dollars a year separates the registered models below. They split on parts supply, the number of years each is expected to give, and the age at which repairing stops making sense.

Running cost is settled, so decide on something else
Electricity is not the deciding input here. The two registered models further down sit eighteen dollars a year apart on their NEA labels, on capacities within one percent of each other and the same tick count. A pitch built on those eighteen dollars has nothing underneath it.
Daikin is the cautious end of this pair, and the recorded fields say why. The brand is Japanese and priced mid-market. Parts are rated Excellent, the top of the three-band scale the catalogue uses. Market presence is logged as dominant, and the wall-mounted lineup is recorded as familiar ground for local technicians. Expected service life is 10 to 15 years.
Midea is the volume name on the register. Eighty-two Midea rows appear in the July 2026 NEA snapshot, more than any other manufacturer, with Daikin second at forty-seven. Its price tier is budget, market presence is logged as growing, and parts sit at Moderate. Recorded service life is 6 to 10 years. The catalogue places the brand in newer BTO fit-outs, rental units, and value-driven replacement jobs.
Retail price sits outside what the register holds, so this page cannot rank the two on what you pay at the counter.
The two models, and where the small gap comes from
Two registered rows carry this comparison, not two brand averages. Daikin's RZFC35EV1G is a single split rated 3.49 kW, four ticks, and its label prints 1,606 kWh a year at S$434. Midea's MGP-1S12D is rated 3.52 kW on the same single-split basis, also four ticks, printing 1,542 kWh at S$416. The Midea is the larger of the two, so capacity explains none of the eighteen dollars.
Full load is a dead heat and part load is not. Daikin's full-load COP reads 3.97 against Midea's 3.95. At part load, Midea reads 6.16 and Daikin 5.74. The weighted scores land at 5.28 and 5.03. On both rows the weighted figure sits about sixty percent of the way from full load toward part load, so part-load behaviour carries more of the label than full load does.
Neither row is the efficient pick inside its own size class. Thirty-six registrations sit within eight percent of 3.5 kW, and thirteen of those carry four ticks. Ranked on annual cost the Midea is sixth of the thirteen, mid-table, and the Daikin is tenth, in the expensive third. The band runs from S$382 to S$451.
The tick rating is the lever here, not the badge. The cheapest five-tick single split in this size band is registered at S$347 a year, S$69 under the Midea row and S$87 under the Daikin. That step is worth almost four times the brand gap on the Midea row, and nearly five times it on the Daikin. Midea carries both four-tick and five-tick rows in this band. All three Daikin rows in it are four-tick, at S$434 to S$435.
Two caveats sit on those figures. Both come off a register snapshot dated 22 July 2026, priced at 27 cents a unit across eight daily hours. The eighteen dollars is therefore a consumption calculation rather than a reading of anybody's bill. The register also prints an expiry against each registration, November 2026 for this Daikin row and March 2029 for the Midea. Confirm the model is still on sale.
Parts supply and the age bands that follow from it
Parts is the axis with real teeth on this pair. Daikin holds the Excellent rating and Midea holds Moderate, two bands apart on a three-band scale. The record describes a deep local supply chain on the Daikin side, with same-day parts for most repairs. Everyday Midea components are turning up locally more often than they used to. The exception is the control board, recorded on older Midea series as slower to obtain than the Japanese equivalent, and a board is rarely a fault you can wait out.
How each brand announces a fault changes the first phone call. A Daikin prints an alphanumeric code on the front of the indoor unit, which an owner can read out. Many residential Midea models signal with a blinking indicator instead, and the record says that makes remote diagnosis harder. On a Midea, film the sequence before calling. The record names that as the fastest way to identify the fault category.
Recorded service lives are 10 to 15 years and 6 to 10, and those bands barely touch. Held against fifteen years in the same flat, one describes a single purchase and the other describes two. Those lifespans harden into dates once the repair-or-replace guidance is read alongside them. Daikin's thresholds fall at five years, then eight, then twelve. Midea's fall at three, then five, then seven.
Stand a seven-year-old unit of each brand side by side. The Daikin sits where repair is still the default, and only major compressor failure is recorded as prompting a replacement conversation. The Midea has reached the age where the catalogue puts a board or compressor bill close to replacement cost. Past seven years, the record says major component failures on a Midea almost always favour replacement.
Age on its own settles nothing, because the part that failed carries equal weight. Sensor and drainage faults are recorded as cost-effective repairs on both brands, and capacitor work is affordable on both. Boards and compressors are the two that force the question. That band opens at five years on the Midea and at eight on the Daikin.
Servicing is not a differentiator, so it should not appear in either quote as one. The two maintenance schedules in the catalogue are identical, task for task and interval for interval. Midea's owner notes state the brand is no more and no less demanding than the Japanese brands here.
The faults that belong to one brand and not the other
The dated fault patterns on record fall at opposite ends of a unit's life. Daikin's two age-tagged patterns, communication faults and board failure, are both logged past year seven. Midea's age-tagged pattern is weak cooling under three years, which the record attributes to installation rather than the unit.
U4 and U0 are the Daikin signature. Both report the indoor and outdoor sides failing to talk to each other. On systems over seven years, the recorded causes are wiring degradation or a PCB fault. Board failure on its own is logged as more frequent once a unit passes seven or eight years. Inverter control boards are more complex than non-inverter ones, and the record calls that the key repair-cost factor beyond eight years.
Refrigerant loss is the second Daikin item worth naming, recorded at the flare joints and pipe unions. Confirm any loss with a pressure test before agreeing to gas. The record is explicit that low gas is rarely the first thing to check, because fouled coils, a slow fan motor or a drifting thermistor each produce the identical complaint.
E1 and P1 are the Midea signature. They flag a high-pressure protection trip or a sensor fault, and the checks that follow are airflow restrictions, dirty coils and gas condition.
Weak cooling on a young Midea is the second pattern, and the record points away from the machine. On units under three years, reduced output is most likely down to how the system went in. Check the pipework, the condensate route and the charge before suspecting the unit. Outdoor noise is the third, traced to mounting or an unbalanced fan blade rather than a dying component.
Water leaks sit on both records, so that column separates nothing. On a Daikin the listed causes are drainage blockage and condensate routing, with HDB shared risers making recurrence more likely. On a Midea, how often it recurs is recorded as an installation-quality question.
Buy the Daikin, unless one of these applies
Buy the Daikin for a flat you own and expect to hold for another ten years or more. Three recorded fields point the same way, and none of them is running cost. Parts sit two bands higher. Service life is rated half as long again. The band where major failures almost always favour replacement starts at twelve years rather than seven.
Midea is the right answer inside a narrower set of situations, and those situations are ordinary in Singapore. A unit going into a rented flat. A system swapped inside about six years, or handed over with the property. A budget that is genuinely fixed, where the alternative is economising on the installation. Over a short hold the shorter service life never costs anything.
One condition rides on that Midea recommendation. The brand's early faults are recorded as installation problems rather than unit failures, which makes the fitting crew the variable for the first three years. Fitted by a crew that installs Midea regularly, with pipework and drainage done properly, it is a sound short-horizon buy. A poor install produces exactly the early-life symptom that dominates this brand's fault list.
Two things to settle before signing either quote. First, insist the model code appears in writing, because a badge has no running cost and a register row does. Six Midea registrations within eight percent of 3.5 kW undercut the MGP-1S12D quoted above, the cheapest of them by S$34. Second, ask how the exact model reports a fault. If it blinks, settle on installation day who in the flat will film the pattern.
