Signs your Carrier aircon needs an inverter-module check
These symptoms can involve the inverter power stage, but they can also come from its supply, cooling, connectors, feedback, main board or connected compressor or fan.
An IPM, power-module or inverter-board code appears
A Carrier inverter-related code identifies the power stage or protection path. It does not prove which replaceable assembly has failed.
The outdoor unit starts, trips or stops under load
A weak power stage may fail as demand rises, but the supply, cooling path and connected load can create the same protection.
Cooling stops across several connected rooms
A shared outdoor inverter or driver fault can stop the connected system even when indoor units still respond.
Examples of Carrier systems we check
These are common examples, not a complete list. We also assess other Carrier systems after checking the indoor and outdoor model labels.
42K / 38K residential split systems
Toshiba-based Carrier inverter systems
40RM cassette and concealed ducted systems, subject to model access
Don't see your Carrier model?
Send photos of the indoor and outdoor model labels, plus the error code or a short video of the symptom. We'll confirm the right diagnostic starting point and inverter module service scope before arranging the visit.
It may not be the inverter module
Before ordering a model-specific module or driver board, we check three problems that can create the same code, trip or no-start behaviour.
Supply, connector or communication fault
Voltage imbalance, loose terminals, damaged harnesses or a failed main-to-inverter link can stop a healthy power stage.
Cooling or feedback fault
A blocked heat sink, failed fan, temperature-sensor circuit or current-feedback problem can trigger module protection.
Compressor or fan load fault
A locked or electrically damaged load can create real overcurrent while the inverter module is protecting correctly.
Carrier error codes related to inverter module problems
Your Carrier error code helps us identify where to start. It does not prove that the inverter module needs replacement. Open the group that matches where the code appeared.
Codes that depend on the exact model3 guides
- P0Carrier P0 blinking light: IPM malfunction or IGBT over-strong current protection. What to send before booking a repair.
- PC00Carrier PC00: ODU IPM module protection. Whether it is safe to keep running, what to send us, and the checks a technician should confirm first.
- PC02Carrier PC02: compressor top or IPM temperature protection and compressor top or IPM module protection. What to send before booking a repair.
Do not see your code here? Send a photo of the display and both model labels. Carrier codes can mean different things across model and system families.
What happens during a Carrier inverter module check
The aim is to give you a clear diagnosis and a sensible repair decision, not an automatic parts quote.
Send us the model and symptoms
Share the Carrier indoor and outdoor model numbers, any error code, which rooms are affected and what happened before the fault.
We test the likely causes
We match the code to the exact IPM, IGBT, inverter-board, fan-driver or compressor-driver stage, then test supply, connectors, cooling, feedback and the connected load.
You receive the finding and quote
We explain what failed, whether the correct part is available and whether repair or replacement is the better use of your money.
We repair and test the system
After approved work, we run the Carrier system through a full cycle and confirm that the original symptom or error has cleared.
Is Carrier inverter module repair worth it?
It depends on the confirmed fault, system age, parts availability and the condition of the rest of the aircon.
Parts and timing
The correct Carrier inverter power stage may be a separate IPM/IGBT, a driver board or a complete outdoor-PCB assembly. We confirm the exact outdoor model, board revision, supported repair, part number and distributor lead time before you approve work.
Our recommendation
Inverter-module repair is usually sensible when the exact power stage is confirmed, the supported module or board assembly is available, and the compressor, fan, supply and cooling path remain healthy; an older system with a damaged compressor or several board faults needs a closer repair-versus-replacement comparison. Carrier systems commonly have a service life of 10-14 years. For a system over 12 years, major component failures generally favour replacement. Carrier residential parts for older models become harder to source, and unit efficiency has likely declined. Minor fixes can extend use while planning a changeover.
If replacement is the better option, we can compare the repair quote with a suitable new system instead of asking you to keep repairing an uneconomical unit. See our aircon system replacement process.
Why diagnosis matters on Carrier aircon
Carrier inverter codes can point to the IPM/IGBT, driver board, connector, supply, cooling or feedback circuit, or a genuine compressor or fan load. Testing the complete power path helps avoid replacing a working module or board.
A Carrier inverter module fault we check carefully
Carrier P0, PC00 and PC02 identify IPM, IGBT or module-protection paths. We separate the power stage from the supply, cooling, compressor load and wider outdoor board before selecting an assembly.

Other Carrier repair checks
If testing rules out the inverter module, these are the closest same-brand checks for the system.
Workmanship warranty
We stand behind the repair we carry out, and we are straight about the part of the cover we do not set ourselves.
Labour
30-day labour warranty. If the same fault returns from the repair we did, we come back and the labour is on us, with no second diagnosis fee.
Parts
Parts follow whatever warranty the distributor sets for that component, so the term varies by part. We tell you the coverage before you approve the quote.
